Bad fanfic tropes turns to excellent comic!
By Dione Basseri
HOW many fanfics out there have the plot of one of the Big Bads having a romantic relationship with one of the Princesses? And this volume does it with King Sombra.

And you know what?

It's GOOD.

Continued excellend from the Friendship is Magic comics. This takes the traditional comic storyline of mirror universe where all that is evil is good and vice versa, and in that it is somewhat cliche, but the cliche is freshened up by establishing a previous link and friendship between the worlds of Equestria and Mirror Equestria. Even more interesting, the background story is set right around the turn of Princess Luna into Nightmare Moon, adding in a story of grief and improper coping mechanisms, as Princess Celestia returns to the mirror world to see her sister happy and good.

I actually found myself liking Good King Sombra, and the ending was rather heartbreaking. But it does pose an interesting question: If the Sombra in the mirror world is now evil...does that mean Equestia proper's Sombra has turned...good?

Here's to hoping for a sequel!

A well-done and exciting take on a cliche "mirror-verse" idea
By Kenya Starflight
Yes, I'm an adult who likes to read "My Little Pony" comics... but in my defense these aren't your typical ponies. While the thought of a MLP comic might conjure up mental images of brightly colored ponies obsessing over fashion and having adorable romps through colorful, saccharine landscapes, the reality is a little different. Instead we get brightly colored ponies having surprisingly epic adventures with nods to the admittedly large adult fanbase, and managing to have adventures that even the surprisingly action-y "Friendship Is Magic" cartoon doesn't show us. The past four volumes of the comic have been excellent, but I had to admit that the premise of the fifth comic gave me pause. After all, a mirror-verse/Bizarro World/"Shattered Glass" version of a beloved universe has been done nearly to death, and I could only wonder if the MLP comics could pull it off without falling into cliché.

I needn't have worried -- "Reflections," the mirror-verse is done well. It raises the stakes for the Mane Six's adventures, and gives us a surprisingly bittersweet, but still fun and epic, adventure.

The Mane Six find themselves called to Canterlot on Luna's behest -- Celestia has gone missing. Just as Twilight and her friends are putting their heads together to try to uncover her whereabouts, however, Celestia appears from an enchanted mirror, wounded and bearing grave news -- apparently centuries ago, she and Starswirl the Bearded used the mirror to travel to alternate realities, including one where Celestia, Luna, and the Mane Six are evil... and the noble and benevolent King Sombra rules the land, trying to protect it from the wrath of the sadistic sisters. Determined to save this alternate universe, Twilight and her friends venture into the mirror, where they set out to help Sombra protect his world and defeat Celestia and Luna's evil doubles. But the two worlds are more closely linked than anyone realizes, and Celestia's frequent travels to this world -- and her unexpected relationship with Sombra -- have upset the balance and threaten to destroy both worlds. And it may take a terrible sacrifice to set things right again...

The "flipped universe" concept has been done so many times in fiction that I'm sure many comic readers are sick of it -- even Hasbro and IDW, the creators of the MLP comics, have indulged in it in the past with the Transformers' "Shattered Glass" universe. But here the writers and artists have managed to make the premise more than just a game of "okay, so what do evil Celestia and Twilight and good Sombra and Discord look and act like in this universe?" Instead of focusing only on a game of "spot the difference," they take the time to show how both versions of the universe are linked, and the disastrous consequences of mixing said universes. I won't lie, it was interesting and hilarious seeing "good" versions of such villains as Sombra, Discord, Chrysalis, the Flim-Flam Brothers, and the Great and Powerful Trixie, and I was rather disappointed to find the evil Mane Six only making a cameo appearance... but at the same time, I greatly appreciate that there's more to this comic than "har har, we made Celestia the bad guy, go us."

As always, Andy Price's art is fantastic, true to the style of the show but still fluid and dynamic, and detailed enough to be interesting without veering into the grotesque or the Uncanny Valley. The colors fit the mood, never being too gritty or too garish, and the designs for the alternate versions of our favorite characters were well-done and interesting. And as always, the artist manages to fit in plenty of references for adult readers to catch without ever being inappropriate -- keep an eye out for references to "The Shawshank Redemption," "The Fugitive," and even song lyrics by Velvet Underground.

Word of warning -- this comic IS bittersweet, and even this jaded nerd admits to nearly shedding a tear toward the end. You have been warned...

Probably not the best choice of reading material for very young children, but older kids and adult fans will greatly enjoy this book. It's a mirror-verse Equestria that's fascinating to explore, and I hope it gets revisited in the comics again someday.

Great comic that is not too "delicate" for a younger reader.
By Deneice
This was my daughter's first comic and she really enjoyed it. My daughter is only 4 so she cannot read it yet, but she loved narrating the story the way she wanted. This comic is very vibrant in color and was well made so I think it will withstand some abuse from my little one.
