Theories of the Past Still Ring True Today

I found this book to be entertaining and revealing. The basic of many modern exercise programs originated with Bob Hoffman and his training methods. It put everything from single set training, volume training, heavy light training and muscle confusion programs are all listed here, years before they became popular. Easy reading and eye opening. I look forward to my next purchase.

THE FAMOUS "LIFE" OF JESUS, TAKEN FROM THE AKASHIC RECORDS

Levi H. Dowling (1844-1911) was originally an American minister of the Disciples of Christ, an Army chaplain during the Civil War, as well as an advocate of Prohibition.

This book was first published in 1908; the publisher's back cover copy states that "After forty years of study and silent meditation, Levi reached a state of spiritual consciousness that permitted hiim to enter the domain of these superfine ethers and interpret their mysteries. He found that every thought of every living thing is recorded in these ethers. These, then, are the 'akashic records' from which Levi transcribed his great work." The book is divided (in biblical style) into 22 "Sections," then into chapters (which go throughout the book rather than "re-setting" with each new section), and verses; each chapter has a helpful summary preceding it.

The book begins with Jesus' birth to Joseph ("a devoted Essene"; I, 1:12) and Mary (nothing is said of a "virgin birth"). Jesus and John ("the Harbinger") leave home with their parents' blessing and are taught Hinduism and Zoroastrianism (III, 10) and Buddhism (III, 11). Jesus is critical of a Rabbi (V, 17) who does not understand that "I see a golden cord that runs through all the Ten Commands that binds them fast and makes them one. This cord is love, and it belongs to every word of all the Ten Commands." (V, 17:3-4) Rabbi Hillel recognizes Jesus' worth, and calls him "the Day Star from on high" (VI, 21:5). Jesus spends years in India (Section VI), Tibet (VII), Persia (VIII), Assyria (IX), Greece (X), and Egypt (XI), where he meets the "Council of the Seven Sages of the World," including China (XII).

Ultimately, however, Jesus returns to Galilee (XI, 60), where John has already begun his ministry (XIII), and he baptizes Jesus (XIII, 64:5-8), after which Jesus goes into the wilderness, where he meets the "tempter" (XIV, 65). Jesus attends a wedding in Cana, and says, "There is no tie more sacred than the marriage tie. The chain that binds two souls in love is made in heaven, and man can never sever it in twain." (XIV, 70:3-4) He drives the merchants out of the Temple (XV, 72), meets again the shepherds who appeared at his birth (XV, 76), travels with his followers (called the "Christines"; XV, 84), selects twelve apostles (XV, 88), and gives the Sermon on the Mount (XVI, 94-101).

He rejects a Pharisee's call for a miracle, instead saying, "The son of man will spend three days and nights within the heart of earth and then come forth again. and men will see and know." (XVI, 107:17) After explaining to the Pharisees his belief about fasting, he explains, "The conscience may be taught. One man may do in conscience what another cannot do." (XVI, 119:20) He feeds 5,000 and walks on the water (XVII), is transfigured (XVII, 129), and explains to his disciples that "the kingdom of God... is just at hand; but men can never see it come" (XVII, 145:5).

After the triumphal entry into Jerusalem (XVII, 151), he is betrayed by Judas (XVIII, 159-160, 164), he institutes the Lord's Supper (XVIII, 160; "This loaf is symbol of my body... so you shall eat the bread of life, and never die"; 160:37-39), is arrested and taken before Pilate, who urges him to flee the country (XVIII, 163), he is tried (XVIII, 166-168), and crucified (XVIII, 170), but he is resurrected (XX) and appears "fully materialised" to his disciples (XXI, 173-175), then to the eastern sages in India (XXI, 176) and Greece (XXI, 178), and then establishes the Christine Church (XXII, 182).

This is obviously not a work for those studying the "historical Jesus"; but this book is one of the most influential "alternative" theories of Jesus' life, and is of ongoing appeal to persons looking for such.

As a young man growing up near Basel, Jung was fascinated and disturbed by tales of Nietzsche's brilliance, eccentricity, and eventual decline into permanent psychosis. These volumes, the transcript of a previously unpublished private seminar, reveal the fruits of his initial curiosity: Nietzsche's works, which he read as a student at the University of Basel, had moved him profoundly and had a lifelong influence on his thought. During the sessions the mature Jung spoke informally to members of his inner circle about a thinker whose works had not only overwhelmed him with the depth of their understanding of human nature but also provided the philosophical sources of many of his own psychological and metapsychological ideas. Above all, he demonstrated how the remarkable book Thus Spake Zarathustra illustrates both Nietzsche's genius and his neurotic and prepsychotic tendencies.

Since there was at that time no thought of the seminar notes being published, Jung felt free to joke, to lash out at people and events that irritated or angered him, and to comment unreservedly on political, economic, and other public concerns of the time. This seminar and others, including the one recorded in Dream Analysis, were given in English in Zurich during the 1920s and 1930s.

A rare gem...

This book is a rare gem: an in depth commentary on a major thinker by another major thinker. It just doesn't get any better than that.

This book is really two books in one. For anyone who is interested in understanding Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra this book is absolutely essential. It is an in depth, line by line, commentary. I have never seen another commentary on Nietzsche's Zarathustra that was this in depth and certainly none by anyone with the stature of Carl Jung. Zarathustra is not your average philosophy book. It is told in the form of a story and there is a great deal of symbolism involved. Jung is the perfect commentator for anyone looking to understand the symbolism of Nietzsche's work as well as the more explicit philosophical points. Unfortunately the Second World War interrupted these lectures so Jung does not make it all the way through Zarathustra but he gets most of the way and at 1600 + pages it is probably just about as much as anybody would want to read anyways.

This book is also (besides being an excellent commentary on Nietzsche) a really excellent summary of Jungian psychology. The students attending these lectures were Jungian analysts in training and Jung's goal in giving these lectures was not simply to provide a philosophical commentary on Nietzsche's philosophy but to demonstrate the methods of Jungian dream analysis by carrying out an analysis on an artistic/philosophical work. This should always be remembered when reading this book. Nietzsche was not the most direct writer and pretty much every great Nietzsche interpretation (Heidegger, Deleuze, etc.) winds up being as much about the interpreter's ideas as it is about Nietzsche. That is definitely true of this book although Jung's interpretations are extremely compelling and one often gets the feeling that Jung is closer to Nietzsche's own intended meaning in his interpretations than Heidegger or Deleuze (despite their obvious brilliance). Jung should definitely be read beside these other major Nietzsche commentators in order to get various perspectives on Nietzsche's often elusive writings (I should also point out that Jung is often very critical of Nietzsche and does have a tendency to reduce philosophical points Nietzsche is attempting to make to Nietzsche's disturbed psychology which is why the reader interested in Nietzsche should read other more philosophical commentaries along with this work). Even those who are not particularly interested in Nietzsche, but who have an interest in Jungian psychology, will benefit a great deal from reading this book as it is one of the clearest presentations of Jungian psychology around. It is often difficult to get a genuine feel for Jungian psychology and Jung's method of analysis from Jung's own works but in these lectures we see Jung in action, actually carrying out an analysis, albeit on a dead philosopher who he never actually met (although they were from the same town and Jung new some of the people who knew Nietzsche). This makes this book very valuable for those with an interest in Jungian psychology.

So this book is highly recommended! It is really a shame that this book is so expensive. It truly deserves a wider audience. If they can publish Heidegger's lecture series on Nietzsche (4 volumes) at an affordable price I don't see why they can't do the same with this book. Are you listening Bollingen?

Did C. G. Jung foresee the future?

If you are primarily interested in reading a commentary on Friedrich Nietzsche's book THUS SPOKE ZARATHUSTRA, I would suggest that you undertake reading the abridged paperback edition titled JUNG'S SEMINAR ON NIETZSCHE'S ZARATHUSTRA, expertly edited by James L. Jarrett (Princeton University Press, 1998).

However, should you elect to undertake reading the two-volume hard-cover edition titled NIETZSCHE'S ZARATHUSTRA: NOTES OF THE SEMINAR GIVEN IN 1934-1939 BY C. G. JUNG, edited by James L. Jarrett (Princeton University Press, 1988), you should be forewarned in advance that C. G. Jung, M.D. (1875-1961), a psychiatrist, had a well-stocked mind.

The pagination is continuous over the hefty two volumes. Unfortunately, however, the publisher has printed the index only at the end of the second volume. But it would have been helpful to have the complete index published at the end of each volume - but perhaps with the pagination as it appears at the end of the second volume.

Basically, Jung's way of commenting on specific passages from Nietzsche's book is to highlight certain words and images in a given passage and then call to mind specific possible parallels from art and literature and the comparative study of religions - and anything else that he can think of. But Jung's way of association can stray far from Nietzsche's texts at times. To their credit, the people in the seminar do their best to pepper him with questions and comments. Oftentimes, however, their questions and comments just spur him on in his associations.

In addition, Jung sermonizes a lot. Of course Nietzsche's book features a lot of sermons he has constructed for the fictional Zarathustra to deliver. So I guess Jung's sermonizing kind of fits in with the spirit of constructing a commentary on the sermons Nietzsche has constructed.

Moreover, in nothing Jung says is he succinct. His motto appears to be, "Why say something in only 50 words when you can say it in 500 words?"

Perhaps you've heard the expression about taking something with a grain of salt. I would recommend taking Jung with a grain of salt.

Here's one tantalizing statement Jung makes: "The unconscious first produces aspects of the historical symbolism [such as the symbolism in the Christ myth: the Resurrection, the Ascension, the Second Coming] which becomes modern or advanced, or anticipates the future through the interference of a definite consciousness" (page 243). (Jarrett did not include this passage in the abridged edition.)

No doubt C. G. Jung thought that he himself represented "the interference of a definite consciousness" anticipating the future of individuation -- the rebirth, or the psychological and spiritual equivalent of the Resurrection, in this life here on earth, of more and more individuals in Western culture - and elsewhere.

Then after their rebirth, they may also subsequently experience the psychological and spiritual equivalents of the Ascension and then of the Second Coming in their personal lives here on earth.

Jung suggests that Nietzsche (1844-1900) wrote THUS SPOKE ZARATHUSTRA in the 1880s in the midst of going through a proverbial mid-life crisis. But Jung sees the individuation process as the central work one undertakes in the proverbial second half of life - roughly, after the age of 35. Thus if Nietzsche wrote ZARATHUSTRA as part of a mid-life crisis in the 1880s, it would at the most indicate only the inception of the individuation process in his life. Tragically, he did not live long enough to complete the individuation process and experience psychological and spiritual rebirth. (Nietzsche descended into irreversible madness in 1889. He died in 1900.)

In addition to discussing individuation a lot, Jung discusses the unconscious a lot, and he also discusses the personal shadow a lot. Basically, he says that each person must deal with his or her own personal shadow. You see, when we have not assimilated our own personal shadow, we tend to project stuff in our personal shadow onto other people, which is not an admirable tendency.

Another one of Jung's favorite terms to use and repeat is "enantiodromio," which he acknowledges that he has borrowed from Heraclitus.

Now, Jung claims that Nietzsche was an introvert. This claim about Nietzsche strikes me as sensible and accurate.

Next, Jung invokes his understanding of the way "enantiodromio" works to claim that Nietzsche's unconscious was extraverted.

Then Jung claims that Nietzsche's fascination with the ancient Greek god Dionysius and with the Dionysian spirit show the extraverted tendency of his unconscious. Makes sense to me.

Nietzsche wrote each of the first three parts of ZARATHUSTRA in ten days each. The fourth part took him longer to write. After he had completed ZARATHUSTRA, he went on in a frenzy of creative writing to complete other works as well - before his descent into madness in January 1889.

Writing is usually a rather solitary activity. But writing for publication can be understood as extraverted in spirit, and actually publishing one's writing is extraverted in spirit.

For the sake of discussion, let's use the terminology that Jung uses and say that Nietzsche was experiencing the Dionysian spirit in his unconscious and that this helped him to write the works he completed in the 1880s.

But just how healthy is it to live in such close proximity to one's unconscious for several years? Granted, Nietzsche had a laundry list of physical ailments that compounded his life.

In connection with the character Zarathustra, Jung claims repeatedly that he represents the archetype of the wise old man. In constructing his commentary on Nietzsche's book, I would suggest that Jung is drawing on the archetype of the wise old man in his psyche.

Even though Jung is wordy and digressive and sermonic, he is a good guide to Nietzsche's puzzling book. But take him with a grain of salt.

This is one of the most valuble guides to the study of Nietzsche's philosophy. Symbolism was at the heart of Nietzsche's project, and Jung is the master of symbolic interpretation. Anyone who is attempting to fully grasp Nietzsche's Zarathustra must consult this text. This edition includes an exceptional index, useful in a work of this size and scope.

Get ready to dive into the fascinating world of electronics and computer programming

Disclaimer: I was a technical reviewer of the chapter on application of Raspberry-Pi (chapter 14) in this book for the publisher.

If you are the kind of person who likes to tinker with electronics and computers than "Python Playground" is definitely a book worth reading. It assumes the reader has moderate level of understanding in computer programming and python language. The author introduces electronics and programming in python through a series of interesting hardware and software projects. The book covers a wide range of topics including text processing, data analysis, plotting, animation, simulation (implementation of some interesting algorithms like Karplus-strong), image manipulation and processing, computer graphics (including 3D) and lastly hardware (electronics, interfacing and fun with Raspberry-Pi). The style of introducing these topics by examples makes this book eminently readable and can get the reader to do useful stuff right off the bat. Personally, I was able to interface numerous electronic instruments to a computer for data capture, analysis and display by using the chapter on Arduino (chapter 12) as reference. The chapters on hardware hacking are an excellent introduction to electronic circuits and other popular hardware like Arduino and Raspberry-Pi. Overall, not only is this a great book to read but also a good reference. I would definitely recommend this book to all of you who are interested in dabbling with electronics and programming.

Fantastic Projects

I've only skimmed through this book so far, but it's amazing. I can't believe the quality of the projects that Venkitachalam provides.

I've been programming with Python for a while now, and I'm tired of so many beginner's books. I'm glad that the author assumes you are familiar with the language and concepts, and he dives right into making awesome projects.

You can make a laser light show that responds to sound, you can simulate the sounds of musical instruments, and create 3D particle effects, all using Python.

If you want to make cool s***, I HIGHLY recommend this book!

If you have got the basics of Python and are looking to find interesting programming projects, then this is the book for you. It nicely leads the reader through various programming projects in an easy to read style. There is just enough math and theory to satisfy the curious and the coding style is clear and easy to follow.

So, if you ever wanted to understand how auto-stereograms worked and then write the code for it, then you will love this book.

There is a section for every step of growing to give me the ability to grow the best marijuana possible

I have been growing marijuana now with the help of Jorge Cervantes now for close to 10 years, I started out with the marijuana bible everyone speaks of. It has been an up and down battle with growing, but I could always rely on the bible to help me out. I now have stepped up in the arena, and moved into breeding, and felt I needed more information. I was informed about the presage of Jorge's new book, and knew I had to have it, upon receiving this book, I was blown away, by everything. There is a section for every step of growing to give me the ability to grow the best marijuana possible, from pest and disease control, to how to properly breed for the traits you want. Being an encyclopedia doesn't mean it's just for experienced users either, this book is presented in a format that will be understood by everyone, with high quality pictures and broken down detailed explanations. Jorge didn't just stop at the information about marijuana, he takes you on the journey that has been his life's mission and introduces you to the people that have been fundamental in the legalization and de criminalization of marijuana around the world.

A comprehensive reference on all aspects of Cannabis production

This is likely the most complete and detailed reference available on the subject of Cannabis production, covering everything from the basics of gardening to the construction of large growing facilities, plant diseases and problems, breeding and genetics, pest control -- you name it, it's covered here, and in amazing detail, profusely illustrated with beautiful photos and informative graphics.

Interestingly, the foreword is written by Vicente Fox, former President of Mexico, whose country and people have suffered the worst of the so-called War on Drugs, and whose insights are especially poignant. Beyond that, there is a brief discussion of the history of medical cannabis, and not a great deal on the subject of legalization. That's for the better, as the situation regarding both medical and recreational cannabis is changing so rapidly. It should be noted that while the main focus of the book is on medical Cannabis, the information is equally valid and useful for those who live where either personal or professional Cannabis production is legal.

Beginning with a general overview of the growing process, there are detailed chapters on everything from seed selection and germination, indoor and outdoor gardening, hydroponics, lighting, life cycle and flowering, harvesting, and post-harvest processing and preservation, and troubleshooting the various problems that come up. The information is not just there, but it is well organized and presented, so you can look up and find what you need. I was especially impressed by the illustrations of nutrient deficiencies -- rather than just the usual leaf photos, there are illustrations that show how each deficiency manifests itself throughout the plant; I found this helpful because, at least to me, most of the deficiency photos look pretty much the same by themselves.

There is so much here that it's difficult to summarize it all -- no way to, in fact, other than just to say, if you are involved in the world of Cannabis production, THIS is the book you want! It's a very large book, 8.5x11 inches, and heavy as a brick. But for a resource that has pretty much everything you could want to know, and top-quality production, it's the brick of gold you'll be glad to have.

A remarkable piece of work, a true masterpiece Sir Jorge has created! An 'all you need' book to reference anything cannabis in a format that is easy to follow and understand. Brilliant and descriptive photos accompany the fountain of knowledge written in this book. One can genuinely feel the amount of effort put forth to produce such a gift to the cannabis world. Valuable information on not only cultivation but also for medical patients who need info on the different varieties that pertain to their individual needs. Included are the many modern ways to extract, consume and get the maximum benefits of the plant material. Scientific information included in many chapters to support the info.

There's even a recipe section for cooking with cannabis and the many options for this. If you could buy only one book on the subject, this is it. Thank you so much Jorge for this treasure! No seed was left unturned. I'll indulge to that!!

Introduction to Bryology

Great book. Nicely written with terrific illustrations. Chapters are laid out by classes or orders of bryophytes, and there are several chapters about more general aspects such as physiology and genetics. The appendices offer information on collecting, mounting, and culturing as well as a basic key. Each chapter has its own references for further reading. A great intro to bryophytes.

If you want to learn about and understand Moss, Hornworts & Liverworts - collectively known as Bryophytes - THIS BOOK IS STILL THE ONE TO START WITH. Encompassing and concise, it also has gorgeous line drawings which provide visual details that are hard to see sometimes because some of these plants are really small.

Two other books that will help the student of Bryophytes are: Bill & Nancy Malcom's MOSSES & other Bryophytes: AN ILLUSTRATED GLOSSARY and the British Bryological Society's Field Guide to British & Irish Bryophytes. Regardless of where in the world you find Bryo's these books will help you learn about these little lovelies.

Both The Introduction to Bryology and the Illustrated Glossary are OP and really should be re-printed...
