I've purchased many "...for Dummies" books in the past but this is the first one I've actually read cover-to-cover. If you are familiar with the "...for Dummies" series, you know what you're going to get: a nuts and bolts, start with the basics, type of book. Having knowledge of and experience in the traditional waterfall project methodology for software development and delivery, I wanted to learn more about Agile Project Methodology but I wanted to make sure I started with a solid foundation. If your plan is the same as mine, this book fits the bill. It begins with background information (Ch. 1), then the Agile Manifesto and the 12 Agile Principles (Ch. 2) and builds on that each chapter thereafter. Besides the key terms, definitions, project team roles, Agile in practice, etc.... this book delves into topics such as procurement, working with vendors, and project cost and budget considerations specific to Agile projects. If you read from cover-to-cover, you will notice some repetition in the book; intended for those who use the book as a reference - read a section here, chapter there, skip ahead. I didn't mind it. In fact, I used it to my learning advantage. I feel confident in what I have learned here, so much so, I feel I am ready to move on and tackle heftier Agile-specific topics

Very Informative - just like Mark's in-person classes

I was able to attend one of Mark's Certified Scrum Master classes through his company, Platinum Edge, and it was such a great course I had to buy this Agile Project Management book to follow. Similar to Mark's in-person teaching style, this book was extremely informative and easy to understand. I also bought Scrum for Dummies and am excited to read that too!

I read this book prior to taking an Agile class from the author. And I'm glad I did, since his 16-hour lecture/workshop was jam-packed with concepts that were new to me. Once I understood it, I realized that Agile is the way of the software industry. Yet it can be applied to most human endeavors with good results.

The original backpacker's bible

I bought this recently to reread after having read it originally around 1973. I bought the revised version, "The New Complete Walker", shortly after it came out in 1978. For many of us, this was the original hiker's bible. Fletcher not only covers all of the basics of modern hiking/backpacking but in a charming way romances your interest in going hiking. Unfortunately, at least to me, the last version "The New Complete Walker IV" was clearly written by Chip Rawlins with very little input from Colin Fletcher. Version IV is disjoint, too long, too wordy and has too much product information. The whole thing begins to come off as a gear buyers guide. Whereas the original is full of a passion for hiking and backpacking, the latest is just lengthy and pedestrian. So, what is the point of my review? The original is still very much worth reading. Although Fletcher talks about gear, it is almost always in the context of functionality not specificity. The original is full of the joy of the outdoors, how to be reasonably comfortable there and inspiration for going. Even after 40 years, Fletchers advice is still relavent. There are Fletcher's quirky preferences in abundance, like his love of a hiking staff and, being British, tea, but the advice is sound and helpful. He stresses the importance of light weight, admonishing weigh everything, even your undershorts. And here's something potential readers might find interesting. I created a gear list based on Fletcher's book and one based from Ultralight Backpacking's web site. Fletcher's gear weighs in at 22 lbs. base weight. Ultralight's is 14.5 lbs. Fletcher's gear has an estimated new cost of $1020 vs. $2270 for the Ultralight gear. I can take a lot of backpacking trips for $1250 and I'll just "man up" the extra 7.5 lbs. Besides, Fletcher's gear list is likely going to provide you a wider margin of error/safety than the ultralight kit.

Technical information and prices may be dated, But Fletcher's sence of humor and good sense shine on. Nice for trip planning and learning what you really need out there.

Fletcher is your man. Sure, you can find lots of places to read equipment reviews that describe new gear and how it performs in the field. You get that with Colin Fletcher, too, but you also get him and his observations on what you're looking for and feeling about what you're doing and where you are in such a way that you'll want to lace up or slip into whatever it is he's using and hit the dusty trail, too. This is the old, first edition so most of the gear included has been long ago replaced with lighter, stronger stuff. Colin has since shuffled off this mortal coil but flipping through the pages I can see him using these things, talking to himself and pausing to scribble a note or two while waiting for his tea to steep. Buy it for the gear info, keep it for the dreams the man puts into your head.
