Nice, but with issues

A nice presentation of nearly everything you need to know for cinematography. The hardcover version is solid, but was printed with an "Errata" insert of numerous issues within the hardcover edition that wasn't changed before publishing. According to the insert, the softcover and e-book versions are corrected, and they'll send you an e-book version with the purchase of the hardcover edition.

That said, still a solid text to keep around, and addresses everything you're likely to need with references to standards and cameras to/through the year 2012.

Groundbreaking work on attachment.

This is one of my favorite books on understanding the struggle and challenge of addiction. Behaviors will start to make sense and solutions will begin to be revealed. Flores does a great job of reviewing and expelling attachment theory. It is obvious that his work is in the chemical dependency field and should be mandatory ready for those in addictions, especially those not familiar with attachment theory.

About the Author
James M. Henslin, who was born in Minnesota, graduated from high school and junior college in California and from college in Indiana. Awarded scholarships, he earned his Master’s and doctorate degrees in sociology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. After this, he was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health, and spent a year studying how people adjust to the suicide of a family member. His primary interests in sociology are the sociology of everyday life, deviance, and international relations. Among his numerous books is Down-to-Earth Sociology: Introductory Readings (Free Press), now in its twelfth edition. This book of readings reflects some of these sociological interests. He has also published widely in sociology journals, including Social Problems and American Journal of Sociology.

While a graduate student, Jim Henslin taught at the University of Missouri at St. Louis. After completing his doctorate, he joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, where he is Professor Emeritus of Sociology. He says, “I’ve always found the introductory course enjoyable to teach. I love to see students’ faces light up when they first glimpse the sociological perspective and begin to see how society has become an essential part of how they view the world.”

Henslin enjoys reading and fishing. His two favorite activities are writing and traveling. He especially enjoys visiting and living in other cultures, for this brings him face to face with behaviors and ways of thinking that he cannot take for granted, experiences that “make sociological principles come alive.”

Renting this book for my upcoming semester at College. This book is in great condition, granted I thought it was going to be a little poor only because I am only renting it. I love his writing style

The author writes this book as if he was sitting in front of you and you both were having a conversation over coffee. I love his writing style, his ways of simplifying his teachings. The stories he tells at the beginning of each chapter have me reading in advance. If you are planing to take into to sociology find a professor who uses this book!

This book does really provide a down to earth approach about Sociology. It points out over and over that society in different places of the world are very different from the US culture. It shows that one culture is not better than another as some cultures that US citizens would find offensive is commonly accepted in other parts of the world.

About the Author

E.S. Savas is professor of public affairs at Baruch College. He received BA and BS degress from the University of Chicago, a PhD from Columbia University, and an honorary doctorate from the University of Piraeus (Greece). An internationally known pioneer in and authority on privatization, he is the author of numerous books and articles; his books have been published in 21 foreign editions. Savas served as first deputy city administrator of New York and was appointed by President Ronald Reagan as assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. He also held elected office as a member of the borough council of Tenafly, New Jersey. He was professor of public management at Columbia University's Graduate School of Business and taught in the Department of Management, School of Business, Baruch College, where he also served for eight years as chairman.

Argument for Privatization

E.S. Savas makes it clear from the beginning that he's a strong supporter of privatization. Throughout his 40 year career he has petitioned city, state, and local governments to shift more towards the private sector. For Savas, if it is unclear a government service is more efficient than the private sector it should be privatized.

Savas' analysis of privatization is mostly correct. Strong evidence exists that privatization cuts municipal costs and increases the quality of service to consumers. Privatization tends to be more successful with "hard" services, like trash collection, that can be easily contracted and monitored. "Soft" services, like mental health, are difficult to privatize. Almost all cities are happy with the overall results of privatization.

The problem is that Savas doesn't attempt to be objective. The entire book is one long diatribe for privatization. The words "Failures" and "Lessons" are rather deceptive. Reading the title it seems that Savas is making an analysis of privatization and trying to pinpoint where privatization doesn't work. That's not Savas' intent. Savas never claims privatization failed because of market failures. Every time privatization has failed, according to Savas, it's because of short sighted bureaucrats and labor unions. Therefore his "lessons" are how to circumvent public resistant to privatization (p.190 is especially alarming.)

Somewhat strangely Rudolph Giuliani is continual promoted throughout the book. Savas' praise borders on ridiculous at certain points. At times it is difficult for the reader to understand if this is an academic book looking at municipal privatization or a campaign book for Rudolph Giuliani.

Any potential reader should beware that Savas makes no attempt to be impartial. Other books cover the theory and empirical evidence of privatization far superior to Savas' polemic. For anyone looking for an explanation of municipal privatization I suggest Jeffrey Greene's "Cities and Privatization."

A Book that keeps on giving

I have read this book several times. It amazed me in my teens and still amazes me now that I am a grandmother. This is a book that helped me know my body and appreciate it. The writer has helped many Christians appreciate and enjoy sex for I have given copies of this book to many of my friends. This book has also helped husbands satisfy their wives and have wonderful families.

Still a great book today

Read this book many years ago when our family was young. Wanted to share it's wisdom with the youngest in the family as she prepares for marriage. Re-read it; still grateful for the author's beautiful presentation of God's gift of femininity.

concisely helpful, a welcomed change of perspective

This book is very to the point. Trobisch doesn't drone on and on in explanation, but what she relays is succinct information about how a woman's body is built and how to best face the different phases of life as a woman. She also integrates Biblical principles, which further support her conclusions.

She writes to encourage, not only women, but men as well, specifically challenging "brave couples" to read it together. A woman's sexuality is not to be a mystery to her husband, and this is clearly communicated. The intimacy of a married couple is to be experienced together, and it doesn't just happen in the bedroom. Intimacy, conception, pregnancy, birth, breast-feeding, and menopause are all discussed separately. Each referenced study and book are compiled in a list at the end.

Trobisch wrote this book after having passed through the stages of womanhood, enjoying each step of the way. For the woman who would like to learn more about these subjects without being bogged down with the hundreds of pages of most women's books, and would like a Biblically-based approach, I recommend reading "The Joy of Being a Woman...".

Obstetrics and Gynecology: A History and Iconography is the third revised edition of Iconographia Gyniatrica, a comprehensive attempt to tell the history of obstetrics and gynecology through pictures. With more than 1000 illustrations on female anatomy, embryology, midwifery, labor, cesarean delivery, obstetrical instruments, breast-feeding, contraception, and obstetric and gynecologic books, it provides a spectacular report on the medical history of obstetrics and gynecology that could hardly be told just verbally. Every page of this book has something interesting to say and to show. (Figure) Obstetrics in its broadest sense encompasses the entire life cycle, from the creation of a new person to his or her birth. Today the diagnosis of pregnancy is simple and straightforward. However, this was not always the case, as shown in chapter 2: "If the veins within her arm beat against thy hand, thou shalt say: she is pregnant (Brugsh Papyrus, 1350 B.C.)." We travel in time from this Egyptian method of pregnancy diagnosis to the medieval introduction of uroscopy, to the 19th-century French usage of a test called the Kyesteine pellicle, and to the method, announced in 1928, devised by Aschheim and Zondek. Until the 19th century, medicine was divided into three parts -- medicine, surgery, and obstetrics -- with obstetrics being perhaps the oldest branch. That is why it is not surprising to find representations of birth in the crude cave drawings of the ice age (chapter 4). The illustrations of scenes of birth from various nations throughout the centuries are perhaps the most impressive part of the book. Many ancient myths and legends are associated with obstetrics and gynecology. The birth of many heroes and gods are related to the "unnatural" form of birth by cesarean section. This is because the outcome of cesarean section was so poor in ancient and medieval times that if a newborn sustained the operation, it was believed that the gods must have intended an outstanding future for this person. Some examples of such persons in the book are Asclepius (the Greek god of medicine), Julius Caesar, Buddha, Adonis (a Greek hero), and Rustan (a legendary Persian hero). In chapter 11, there are stories and reproductions of many miniatures, woodcuts, reliefs, and paintings depicting these events. Deviations from normal human forms at birth intrigued scientists, artists, and ordinary people for centuries. In chapter 14, there are stories about and illustrations of cyclopia (one eye), sympodia (fusion of the lower limbs), janiceps (conjoined faces), acormia (a head without a trunk), phocomelia (absence of the proximal segments of the limbs), and other birth defects. Many fascinating ancient and historical gynecologic instruments are presented in chapter 17. It is humbling to discover that many of the procedures and instruments that we believe to have been invented in recent decades were actually described centuries ago. In the 1967 edition of Encyclopaedia Britannica, under the history of medicine and surgery, is this description: "The history of medicine is not a branch of medicine; it is medicine itself. Here is no mere antiquarian pursuit or hobby for elderly or retired doctors. Medical history . . . and its study enables one to recapture in some degree the broad outlook of the early days, when a physician was also a philosopher [, and] . . . reinstate the patient to the position he ought to hold; i.e., that of the central figure. Thus, properly viewed, the history of medicine becomes the very basis of medical education." I sincerely believe that this is precisely why Obstetrics and Gynecology should find its place on the shelf of every modern obstetrician and gynecologist, as well as with anyone interested in the medical or cultural history of women's health. Paul thinks dinosaurs are fun, and he conveys his enthusiasm in this well-written account of their life and times. In the first part of the book he describes how the predatory dinosaurs (meat-eating dinosaurs, as opposed to herbivorous dinosaurs) evolved, what they looked like and how they lived. He dispels some commonly held notions: dinosaurs were not cold-blooded, slow or stupid; they were, in fact, the ancestors of birds. The second part of the book is an illustrated catalogue of all important predatory dinosaurs known to date, a new reorganization of predatory dinosaur taxonomy and systematics. Dinosaur are obviously the love of Paul's life, and he sometimes makes us forget that these extraordinary creatures have been extinct for at least 65 million years. In addition, as a paleontologist who does his own illustrations, he can back up his contention that dinosaurs "look neat."

One of the First of Its Kind

Here's an interesting exercise. Conduct a literature search to identify all the SCHOLARLY books published commercially before 1986 that are devoted to special topics (e.g., infinite-dimensional vector spaces) in, say, the fields of mathematics, chemistry, physics, astronomy, genetics, and cellular biology. Expect to turn up items numbering in the hundreds, if not the thousands. Now, conduct a search for all the pre-1986 commercially-published scholarly books devoted exclusively to dinosaurs (henceforth, "SDBs"). You're not likely to come up with more than a single item, William Elgin Swinton's THE DINOSAURS (Thomas Murby & Co., 1934), which went out of print in 1952 but resurfaced briefly in 1968.

Astounding as it may seem, before the publication of Bob Bakker's THE DINOSAUR HERESIES (Citadel, 1986), one could not walk into any book store in the English-speaking world and purchase a TECHNICAL volume devoted entirely to dinosaur paleontology. Prior to 1986, the only such books were treatises published by state or national geological surveys, professional paleontological societies, or museum-affiliated research institutions (example: Charles Whitney Gilmore, OSTEOLOGY OF THE CARNIVOROUS DINOSAURIA IN THE UNITED STATES NATIONAL MUSEUM, Bulletin 110 of the United States National Museum [Government Printing Office, 1920]). These treatises were published in limited runs and today are rarely encountered outside of university libraries. Enthusiasts seeking copies for purchase will probably require the good offices of book dealers specializing in out-of-print scientific tracts and must expect to pay dearly.

Of course, there were scads of POPULAR books on dinosaurs published before 1986. These make strange reading today, not so much because they contain antiquated information, but because they contain so LITTLE information even by the standards of the time. Virtually every popular book on dinosaurs was written to formula: first, a chapter on the beginnings of dinosaur paleontology in 19th Century England; next, a chapter on geologic time that introduces the technical names for geochronological eras and periods but never contemplates an interval of time shorter than an epoch, so that in subsequent chapters the reader will think that various dinosaur types (say, Tyrannosaurus rex and Styracosaurus albertensis) were contemporaries (they both lived during the Upper Cretaceous, didn't they?) when in fact they were separated in time by millions of years (the GEOGRAPHIC distribution of dinosaur genera is never discussed, so that the reader hasn't a clue that Triceratops, for example, is an exclusively North American genus); then, a chapter on pre-dinosaur vertebrate evolution (now, we mustn't forget Dimetrodon!) that frequently blurs the concepts of genus and species so that the reader eventually comes away thinking that every dinosaur genus is monospecific (inevitably, the only SPECIES identified in a popular dinosaur book is [drum roll, please] Tyrannosaurus rex [Would anyone care to name ANOTHER species of Tyrannosaurus?]); finally, a chapter (yes, a WHOLE CHAPTER, usually comprising no more than 25 pages!) on dinosaurs that typically surveys ONLY those genera of which complete skeletons are on display (pre-1986, that usually meant late Jurassic and late Cretaceous dinosaurs of western North America); possibly, a chapter on Mesozoic marine reptiles (and sometimes, a chapter on Cenozoic mammals); and lastly, a chapter on dinosaur extinction.

So, since there were no SDBs, what did the pre-1986 dinosaur enthusiast do if he wanted more information than what was offered in popular books? Well, there WERE a few commercially-published scholarly volumes on vertebrate paleontology in general. The main books were: Edwin H. Colbert, EVOLUTION OF THE VERTEBRATES (John Wiley & Sons, 1980 [one chapter on dinosaurs]); Alfred Sherwood Romer, VERTEBRATE PALEONTOLOGY, (University of Chicago, 1966 [one chapter on dinosaurs]); Romer, NOTES AND COMMENTS ON VERTEBRATE PALEONTOLOGY, (University of Chicago, 1969 [one chapter on dinosaurs]); Romer, OSTEOLOGY OF THE REPTILES, (University of Chicago, 1956 [dinosaurs are mentioned in passing throughout the book]).

Everything changed after 1985. First, there was Bakker's book in 1986, followed by Gregory Paul's PREDATORY DINOSAURS OF THE WORLD (PDW) in 1988. And after PDW, the deluge. There are now SDBs on such specialized topics within dinosaur paleobiology as systematics, osteology, bone histology, functional morphology, physiology, reproductive biology, ichnology, and so on.

Paul's PDW has become something of a classic. As of 11/20/2009, Amazon indicates that the hardcover edition is no longer available and lists only one new copy of the paperback edition (for the alarming price of $151.09). As several other Amazon reviewers have noted, the book's contents show their age. I've had occasion to ask Paul whether he intends to produce an updated edition, but he shows little enthusiasm for the project.

PDW nevertheless makes for exceptionally good reading. Although stretches of the book are pitched at a moderately high level of technicality, most of the technicalities are well-explained and further illuminated by Paul's own outstanding anatomical drawings. Paul's writing is highly engaging, even though every so often an infelicity pops out of the text. Pp. 52 - 53: "In 1983, Michael Benton argued that protoarchosaurs and early thecondonts were not really in competition with one another, but this cannot be so because the two groups were out there squabbling over carcasses and competing for game." The preceding sentences and the illustration on p. 52 invite the suspicion that Paul meant to address thecodonts' possible competition with SYNAPSIDS rather than with protoarchosaurs. Furthermore, although the quoted passage can be rewritten to avoid fallacy, it presently stands as a locus classicus of Begging the Question. [By the way, anybody who's tempted to dismiss Paul as a scientific lightweight who can't command a more robust, less reader-friendly style of technical writing may consult his DINOSAURS OF THE AIR (The Johns Hopkins University Press, 2002), in which far fewer concessions are made to deficiencies in the layman's background.] Paul isn't afraid of controversy, and he usually makes plausible cases even for his more questionable views. Some of the conjectures in PDW haven't stood up well (example: that spinosaurs may be subsumed phylogenetically under the ceratosauria), but others (example: feathered nonavian coelurosaurs) have panned out pretty spectacularly.

PWD is not the last word, nor even the latest word, on its subject. Be that as it may, the book is several very substantial steps up from a mere popularization: while it does reach out to a more general readership, it still enjoys the respect of professionals and is frequently cited in the bibliographies of paleontological articles in the most rigorously-refereed scientific journals.
