Not as much of a course as a short phrasebook

This particular course has always been the weakest spot in usually very good Colloquial series. Even though this is a completely new book, I'm sorry to say Routledge hasn't taken into account any of the massive criticism directed at the previous editions, and the "course" is unlike other Colloquial courses, being more of a phrasebook with a very limited vocabulary.

There are three Colloquial Arabic books published by Routledge, but only one (Colloquial Arabic of the Gulf) lives up to the high standard in Routledge's Colloquial Series. Having said that, even Colloquial Arabic of Egypt, though rather "light" by Routledge standards, is far better than this course.

This book is unsatisfactory since:
1. Learning a new language is reasonably hard, and most Colloquial books published by Routledge are about 300-400 pages. This one in barely 200 pages and, what is more, its font is enourmous. This means that the material in this book compares to 1/3 in another Colloquial book. I don't think Arabic is that much easier...

2. In this very short book, you'll learn very little vocabulary. Colloquial courses like Colloqual Italian, Colloquial Czech or even Colloquial Icelandic teach over 2000 words. This book, in sharp contrast, does not even reach 1000 words.

3. The grammar is explained very briefly, and you don't get any understanding of it.

I'm very interested in Arabic, and the Arabic of the Levant in particular, so it's very disappointing that this book don't live up to the most rudimentary expectations. Routledge is renowned as the worlds leading publisher of high quality language courses (justified in 99% of the cases) and I sincerely hope that they will remove this disgrace and replace it with a book worthy their reputation. If you want to learn Colloquial Arabic, go to Colloquial Arabic of the Gulf and Saudi Arabia. I'm afraid there's no great course on Levantine Arabic to recommend, but Elihay's course in four volumes is far better than this one, so is Kattab's Lebanese Arabic.

Not enough practice in reading the script

I think this book starts out in the right direction by spending adequate time on the Arabic script and then follows up with a brief linguistic analysis of phonological features. Unfortunately, I feel that way too much of the vocabulary, useful phrases, and reading exercises are presented in transliteration rather than actual Arabic script.

I assume a purchaser of this book would be well informed of how difficult any of the dialects of Arabic are, so it's my opinion that forcing us to "sink or swim" with the script from the beginning would have been better. Or at least give us a choice. There's no way a beginner can go and back-form a vocab word in Arabic script based on the transliterations and be correct 100% of the time, especially in regards to the vowel diacritics.

I think the recordings could use better planning as well. More repetitions of sounds in the beginning lessons, at various rates (slow-medium-conversational). A lot of the vowels and consonants sound the same. The native speaker is either poorly recorded, or there is a lack of training for the student on how to create and repeat sounds, for example the difference in articulation of pharyngeal and uvular consonants.

Heraclitus famously noted that you can't step into the same river twice, and Hudson Valley author Busch (Geography of Home) reaches this literal truth by swimming across nine different rivers—many once polluted beyond recognition—in order to "reclaim" them for personal and communal renewal. An avid swimmer, Busch resolved to swim across these rivers (with friends, in summer and during benevolent weather conditions) over the course of four years, despite repeated local admonitions not to go in the water: from the upper Hudson, where she resides, to the Delaware, Connecticut, Susquehanna, Monongahela, Cheat, Mississippi, Ohio and Current Rivers. Along the way she shares delightful lore about these important waterways, insinuating aspects of each river's particular history and beauty, such as that the Hudson was called "the river that flows two ways" by the local Algonquin; the Susquehanna is listed as the most polluted river; the Mississippi is the longest and most changing; while the Current in Missouri is the clearest. Busch enlists reflections from environmentalists and nature writers such as Edward Abbey and Thoreau, and taps into local organizations (e.g., Pete Seeger's) that claim that swimming in a river leads to a sense of stewardship. Love love love this book

I first read excerpts of the book in a 2007 New York Times Magazine article. It so impressed me that I immediately went to the computer and registered to swim the Hudson River that summer(one of the rivers in the book) and did. The book, not surprisingly, is even better than the excerpts. This year I will swim the Hudson again. I would recommend the book to swimmers, environmentalists and pretty much anyone who would like to take some time to reflect on rivers and what they mean to us.

Soul Cleansing

Nine Ways is among the most beautifully writing to come along in years. That alone is reason to jump in and swim along with Akiko Busch. But there's more to this elegant and lyrical and watery reflection. Here is a viscous restorative that, whenever you dip in or out, is sure to salve your soul.

About the Author
Thomas W. Miller is faculty director of the Predictive Analytics program at Northwestern University. He has designed courses for the program, including Marketing Analytics, Advanced Modeling Techniques, Data Visualization, Web and Network Data Science, and the capstone course. He has taught extensively in the program and works with more than forty other faculty members in delivering training in predictive analytics and data science.

Miller is owner of Research Publishers LLC and its ToutBay Division, a publisher and distributor of data science applications. He has consulted widely in the areas of retail site selection, product positioning, segmentation, and pricing in competitive markets and has worked with predictive models for more than 30 years.

Miller’s books include Web and Network Data Science, Modeling Techniques in Predictive Analytics, Data and Text Mining: A Business Applications Approach, Research and Information Services: An Integrated Approach for Business, and a book about predictive modeling in sports, Without a Tout: How to Pick a Winning Team.

Before entering academia, Miller spent nearly 15 years in business IT in the computer and transportation industries. He also directed the A. C. Nielsen Center for Marketing Research and taught market research and business strategy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He holds a Ph.D. in psychology (psychometrics) and a master’s degree in statistics from the University of Minnesota and an MBA and master’s degree in economics from the University of Oregon.

Well Presented Text of Marketing Analytics and Business Data Science With Programming Examples in R and Python

An excellent overview and software implementation of marketing analysis techniques by a team of individuals with wide experience in both the academic and consulting/corporate environments. Also the first Data Science book of several in my possession to reflect the main tools used in
real data science applications and contrasting them in many cases side by side.. The code is excellent and well-commented although I would
have appreciated a greater discussion of the tools and methods in Python and R as they are used in the examples and in conditioning as well as
analyzing data for commercial and academic applications. I also would have appreciated more of a discussion of how practitioners should choose between R and Python for various categories of practical applications. The bibliography is extensive and up-to-date.

I highly recommend this book for the business or data science student, marketing practioner or consumer of data science particularly in the marketing and business arena/

Good information, but poorly organized and presented

There is a lot of good information in this book, but I find it poorly organized and presented.

It's hard to figure out the best audience for this book, and I think when you imagine it as a textbook in a specific degree program, where the instructor would know exactly the prerequisite classes taken by the students coming into the class, then it starts to make sense. Ideas toward the front of the book are not properly introduced and code is thrown at the reader without much in the way of explanation. In the context of a class, the instructor could smooth out these rough edges and likely deliver a coherent educational experience. But as a standalone learning experience, this is rough going.

(I'm sure it's relevant what my own background is, which is completely comfortable with predictive analytics and programming, but ignorant of the specific way that "marketing" folks look at the world.)

I find the book very strangely organized in that Appendix A, "Data Science Methods", is, well, relegated to an appendix, rather than being a central part of the flow of the book. It's a really good chapter!

There is some tremendously useful code presented in this book, but again, the way that it's presented will make it of limited utility to those who do not have a guide in the form of a professor teaching a class or who do not have sufficient background to ramp up to the ideas presented.

I am also not fond of the production qualities of the book, e.g:
1. The paper is overly thin, so you can see the text on the other side of the page, which just makes reading harder to my mind.
2. The code is presented with this horrible gray background. Black text on a gray background (I dunno, maybe 30% gray) is not good contrast. So the code ends up being unnecessarily difficult to read.
3. That this was created using LaTeX is obvious to me. Not because the typesetting is problematic, but because of the front matter, with the separate listings of Figures, Tables, and Exhibits. LaTeX makes producing these listings easy, but just because you can produce them doesn't mean you should. They feel anachronistic and strange.

The fact that all the code and underlying data is available on the web is amazing, so for some folks, the difficult presentation will be worth slogging through to see the examples. But I fear that many would-be readers will just give up because the path is so rough.

Dig deep and add value, a real gold-mine here

Valuable for both marketing professionals and programmers. The goal of informed business decisions is a priceless target in my life and work, and data science is here to help. My favorites, and the most impressive chapters for me, are Predicting Consumer Choice, Finding New Customers, and Retaining Customers, because these add value that is hard to come by. For those with a talent or interest in math and programming as well, this should give you loads of inspiration and I could foresee some really great ventures, ideas, and entrepreneurship coming from the stimulus of this book. The real-world examples, citations, charts, and graphs are excellent. This is obviously not an "average person" or popular consumer-level "pop salesman" book, but much deeper than that. The detailed programming examples are superb and thorough, such as "Analysis for a Field Test of Laundry Soaps" -- to give you an idea of this level of expertise. The Appendices are fantastic, with lots of case studies, code, and data sources. Highly recommended.

The best book on The Authority of the Believer

This book by the great Dr. Sumrall, following in John Macmillan's wonderful teaching footsteps, is the best book I have read on the subject of the Authority of the Believer in Christ Jesus. Concise, precise, practical and tactical spiritual insight from a man of God who knew, and who dealt with difficult issues concerning the overcoming power needed for the Christian and the power daily available to all who will come to Christ by faith, stand on His Word and take the position offered to us in Him. Seated in Christ as taught in the book of Ephesians, and knowledge of that position, is overcoming power. I highly recommend this book to all who love to maintain daily victory and joy in Christ, and to all who seek it.

At first, I thought that this was a little over-priced for such a short book, but I bought it anyway because I am a huge fan of Griffin's webcomic. I am VERY, VERY glad I did. This definitely made it into my top 10 favorite SciFi shorts. Hell, this may even be number one, and I do NOT say that lightly. The story was very engaging and the characters made it quickly into my heart. Despite being less than 50 pages long, this story will be hard-pressed to be matched or beaten in my mind.

Thank you, Rick Griffon. You are an inspiration to writers, I hope to match your talent one day.

For a short story it has a lot of depth

Mr. Griffin really has the knack for good storytelling. With his visual descriptions and my well-exercised imagination, I could very easily see each character in my mind's eye. If you've read the previews for this on Rick's ...affinity account then you should have a good idea of what this book is about.

[SPOILER ALERT]

This book is a sci-fi/furry book about a crew on a terraforming assignment. The protagonist is a character that you wouldn't want to meet in a dark alley, and the antagonist(s) are even worse, but well-written. (opinions...) There are dealings with space pirates, dominant lizards, and a race that had their homeworld destroyed. Lots of well-played emotional baggage. If you frequent tvtropes.org then you'll be able to see a lot of well-used tropes in this.

I've read a good number of mystery books, including a few of the Holmes and Hardy Boys series, and I can see a plot twist from a mile away. But I didn't clearly see the one that came at the end of this one. Even on the last page there's a twist... (No, I won't tell the ending; you'll have to buy it for yourself. But I assure you, it's well worth the dollar and change.)

Short science fiction on a grand scale.

Good scifi is hard to find these days, and good anthro science-fiction is even rarer, which is why I was so glad to discover Ten Thousand Miles Up. 10k Miles is hard to classify - it's set in a space-opera universe, where massive terraforming constructs are jumped through space under the watch of an all-conquering reptilian master race. But the core story also has elements of a heist caper, where bluffs and double bluffs all come together to form a secret plan that just might allow an enslaved species a chance at freedom. Ateri and Jakari, the main characters, might be fuzzy on the outside but are also very human - there is, in fact, a lot to love about all the characters here, whether they be quirky or villainous.

The opening chapter is a bit crowded, as the author has to drop a lot of info to catch the reader up with his complex and fascinating universe. After that, Ten Thousand Miles Up is breakneck fun all the way to the finish line. If you love science fiction and you have a soft spot for anthro characters ala the Chanur saga, you'll have a lot of fun here.

Triggers your thoughts and guides you to organize them well

I wanted to be prepared for the GRE essays before sitting for the exam and in my search for a good book,
found this book on amazon. It had decent reviews so I thought of giving it a try and I think it is worth
every cent. The essay topics are explained in a simple, clear language. After that, the author lists many
points that will give trigger to your thought process. So, you have the points from the author
plus your own points combining which you can write a pretty decent essay. To add to it, there is a sample
essay also given for each Issue/Argument. I would read through the sample essay once to get an idea
of how do I organize my thoughts. The book has worked wonders for me. Even for the topics not covered in the book,
now I know exactly how should I go about organizing my thoughts and writing an essay that would get me a score
of 6 :)

Not what I was hoping for.

I have been studying for the GRE for a few months now. I've purchased and checked out several GRE resources and so far, I have never been compelled to write a review on any of them... until now. I was very excited to receive this text in the mail. At first, it seemed really good. I love how it dissects the claims and has 50 example exercises. Practicing this method effectively helps to make it easier for us to attack them.

Although I'm pleased with the exercises, what I really came for was the sample essays. Afterall, the name of the book is "SOLUTIONS to the Real Essay Topics." While some of the essays are quite insightful, a few of them are not convincing. I'm not sure that a lot of the essays would even get a 5. I want sample 6 essays. It's been frustrating to read them and think to myself, "Wait... you didn't even answer the question!" For example, it states in one of their essays: "...there first needs to be a better means of measuring and reporting student success." OK, I agree, but, like what? They didn't give an alternative, which makes it a very weak essay. I would rate it a 4. They're supposed to be modeling how you should be writing. This essay, by the way, was only three paragraphs long. This is an example of how this book has been frustrating in my process. Sometimes, I felt like the essay was just spewing out facts that did not really show how it was related to the topic. (For example, in Issue Task 3, about the Great Compromise: It spent a long paragraph talking about the Great Compromise, but it didn't connect it to the main idea.) I can leave room for errors, but I'm just very disappointed. I purchase these kinds of books to relieve my stress, not so that I can add to it.

To sum up, this text is ok, but I would supplement with other resources out there. It seemed like some of the essays were carefully planned-out, while some of them were just there to fill up space. I would definitely not just rely on this text to help with my studying for the Analytical Writing portion. I am returning this book to Amazon.
