From School Library Journal
Gr 10 Up-A rap on the window awakens 13-year-old Charlie Bucktin. He's startled to find Jasper Jones, the bad boy of his small Australian town, frantic and in need of his help. Charlie follows Jasper into the night and is led to the battered body of Laura Wishart, hanging from the noose of a eucalyptus tree. Jasper is desperate to cut Laura down as the rope around her neck belongs to him. Convinced of Jasper's innocence, Charlie helps submerge Laura's body in a river and the boys vow to find Laura's killer. Set in the 1960s during the Vietnam War, Craig Silvey's novel (Knopf, 2011) perfectly captures the time period. Charlie's small town reacts with fear at Laura's disappearance and the bigotry simmering just below the surface of the town erupts into violence. Matt Cowlrick gives each character a unique voice and his pacing is impeccable. Strong language and mature content make this appropriate for older teens.-Tricia Melgaard, formerly Broken Arrow Public Schools, Tulsa, OKα(c) Copyright 2011. Review
Starred Review, Kirkus Reviews, March 15, 2011:

"Silvey’s sure-footed, evocative prose, intelligent humor, and careful plot structuring may well ensure this Aussie import lasting status."

Starred Review, The Horn Book Magazine, May/June 2011:
"The mood and atmosphere of the 1960s small-town Australian setting is perfectly realized—suspenseful, menacing, and claustrophobic—with issues of race and class boiling just below the surface."

Starred Review, School Library Journal, June 2011:
"Silvey is a master of wit and words, spinning a coming-of-age tale told through the mind of a young Holden Caulfield."

Multi-Layered Story
By PDXbibliophile
Jasper Jones is an intense read on several levels. Young protagonist, Charlie, often makes references to his latest favorite book, To Kill A Mockingbird, and there many similarities in these two novels. Jasper Jones is set in 1960's small rural town Australia. Like To Kill A Mockingbird, Charlie's town is being poisoned by poverty, prejudice, gossip, alcoholism and despair. Charlie ends up in the center of the town's unraveling when he promises his classmate, Jasper, he will keep a horrible secret about something Jasper has discovered - a secret that is the inciting event for dragging all of the town's deplorable secrets out in the open. Charlie is just trying to do the right thing, but how can it be right, if it is causing so many negative consequences? The story has a gripping opening that leads the reader to believe Jasper Jones is a mystery, and it is, partly.
"And I see it. And everything changes. I'm screaming, but they are muffled screams. I can't breathe in. I feel like I'm underwater. Deaf and drowning..."
"We can't tell anybody Charlie. We have to find out who did this."
The first thing readers will think is, how are two young teens going to solve such a huge mystery? The mystery doesn't crop up again for 200 pages. Most of the story focuses on Charlie trying to survive his decision to keep the secret, and his trying to understand what is happening to all of these people he has known all of his life. But when the Charlie and Jasper finally step up to solve the mystery, it brings surprise twists and surprise ending. Like To Kill A Mockingbird, Jasper Jones is foremost a coming of age story. Also like To Kill A Mockingbird, it does not have a happily ever after ending, but it does have a realistic and satisfying ending.

An instant classic
By D Putri
It took me a while to pick up this book as I must have been put off by the publisher hype that calls Jasper Jones 'the Australian "To Kill of a Mockingbird". But once I got started on it, I could not put it down.

The opening hooked me in instantly. How could it not? The book, set in summer 1965 in the regional mining town of Corrigan, opens with bookish teen Charles Bucktin led into the bush by indigenous boy and local troublemaker Jasper Jones, only to discover Laura Wishart, a girl from school, hanging dead from a tree.

The little world of Corrigan set the perfect stage to depict the racial prejudice imposed on Jasper Jones. A prejudice that would have seen someone like Jasper arrested and convicted without a fair trial, no matter how far from truth the charges are. That is why Charles and Jasper had to take matters in their own hand. They had to find the killer before the body is found.

Despite of the gut wrenching opening, to my delight, Jasper Jones is not a detective story. It is a classic coming age story, where Charles Bucktin has his eyes opened to the realities of his small town existence - racism, domestic abuse, small town parochialism and downright ignorance.

For instance, very much like 1930s America, racism was at its peak in 1960s Australia. In this story, racially motivated hatred and action were widely tolerated. Charles, who narrates the tale, also witnesses racially motivated hatred and violence directed towards best friend, Jeffrey Lu, the son of a Vietnamese migrant. Even though Jeffrey is a brilliant kid with the wittiest comebacks, he is reduced to a mute in the face of bullying.

The author delivers the story without the doom and gloom that would usually accompany such subject matter. In fact, it almost seems like Jasper Jones, the book, is not taking itself too seriously. There is lightheartedness and childish wit in tragedy. Charles Bucktin provided a dose wisdom that goes beyond his age yet within character as gis teenage impulses still dominate the storytelling.

Aside of Jeffrey, Charles also discovers an unexpected ally in Laura's sister Eliza. In fact, her presence in his life gradually blossoms info a romantic relationship. This plagues him secretly as he harbours the terrible secret of Laura's disappearance. Meanwhile the town descends into paranoia and erupts in frantic search efforts at the slightest stir as Laura's whereabouts remains a mystery.

The dialogues between the young characters were my favourite parts of the book. Random banter about how stripes got onto toothpastes and whether one would choose to wear a hat made of live spiders or would rather have a hand full of penises instead were absolutely authentic, funny and heartwarming. It also evoked a sense of nostalgia and even more so, as it is filled with pop culture references of days gone by like Audrey Hepburn movies.

In sum, 'Jasper Jones' is a superb literary work that deserves to be listed as an Australian classic. Highly recommended.

Reminds me of "DeGrassi"
By Dienne
In my college days, we used to gather in the lounge in the late afternoons on weekdays eagerly awaiting the next episode of "DeGrassi Junior High" (which became "DeGrassi High" my second year). It seemed like every possible calamity and scandal struck those poor kids, so much so that it became the House sport to guess the next Big Event - who would get pregnant, who was using drugs, whose parents would split, who'd get what disease, etc. It was hardly realistic, but then, it wasn't really meant to be - it was an after-school special designed to get kids talking about important topics (and to entertain bored college students).

This book reminded me a lot of that old show, and, in fact, I had a few "DeGrassi moments" when some new explosive secret would burst open. This book has it all. Jasper Jones is basically an abandoned street waif. His mother died in an accident when he was little and his father's been a raging drunk ever since. He's been outcast by the townsfolk who blame him for every unexplained mishap and tragedy. And to top it off, what he finds in the little clearing he uses as his home away from home threatens his very existence in the small mining town of Corrigan, Australia (which could just as easily be any town in America, minus the Australian slang).

Charlie Bucktin is a nerdy kid, unblessed with athletic prowess in a town where sports are currency. His tyrannical mother dominates his existence and there's not support to be had from his mild-mannered father. His parents' already rocky marriage is about to be blown apart by one more of Corrigan's many toxic secrets.

Charlie's best friend Jeffery Lu and his family are refugees from Vietnam who are treated like the town's social project - pitied and tolerated, but only so long as they don't cause trouble. And trouble could be something as simple as his father having a job when other Corrigan men are out of work. But at least they're not dying in Vietnam like his mother's family. Undersized Jeffrey is tormented mercilessly by the athletic boys, but he hardly seems to notice as he cheerfully comes back for more, all in the hopes of getting to play cricket.

And Eliza Wishart, the quiet, aloof girl Charlie secretly has his hopes set on, has troubles of her own. Her sister is "missing" and Eliza knows more than she's letting on. Meanwhile, her father, town president and pillar of the community, has some secrets of his own.

When Laura Wishart goes "missing", these four characters and their families are drawn into a heaving swirl of drama that will ultimately both reveal and further bury the ugly secrets that have festered in the town for so long. While there is a certain happy resolution to the story, basically life in Corrigan will go on as before with the same fetid drama continuing to play out.

I agree with reviewers who say that this is not really a plot-focused book. White a lot seems to happen, and often dramatically, few events seem to move the plot along. The book opens as a mystery, but we really make little progress solving that mystery, instead getting sidetracked by the relationships among the characters and the drama of their ordinary lives. When the mystery is solved, it's all at once, as told by one character is a rather anti-climactic sort of way. The plot turns, such as they are, are either too predictable or too left field. The relationship between Jasper and "Mad Jack" Lionel is obvious from the start, where as Charlie's climactic encounter with his mother was one of my "oh come on" DeGrassi moments.

I'm not even so sure I agree that the characters are all that well done (although I do agree the books is heavily character focused). Certain aspects are done really well. The bantering relationship between Charlie and Jeffrey was fresh, genuine and very clever (and spot on with the Superman vs. Batman debated). Also, the budding, uneasy relationship between Charlie and Jasper felt pretty genuine and believable. But other aspects didn't seem so believable. Charlie's mother, for instance, is just unexplainably off-the-wall hostile. yes, we understand that she's frustrated living in Corrigan, and yes, we understand she's been spoiled by her rich, doting family in the city. But it doesn't quite gel into a believable portrait of a woman who could be that unfeeling and cruel to her own son.

Even Charlie doesn't seem to add up, or, at least his role in the story doesn't. Of all the kids/people in Corrigan, Charlie was the only one that Jasper felt he could turn to? Why? Why not someone older and wiser? What was it about Charlie that drew him, and how did he even really know Charlie? And once Charlie was involved, what was his role? I kept expecting Charlie to make a difference, even a small one. He could have, for instance, stood up for Jasper, or even Jeffrey, even in a small way. Charlie spends the book worrying about doing the "right" thing, but then he never really does much of anything. Eliza and Jasper to the work of the story, while Charlie just seems like a frame through which to view everything.

Overall, this book is enjoyable enough if you're simply looking for a light read (and especially if you're a cricket fan), but it sours a little upon closer reflection. There are a few other holes that I haven't touched on because it's hard to say much without giving too much away. The book does do an admirable job of exploring the dark secrets that often lurk beneath the "too nice" life of the most "respectable" members of society. The target audience will probably appreciate that aspect, as they're probably become aware of it in their own lives. Jasper, Charlie, Jeffrey, and, to a lesser extent, Eliza are all engaging characters which helps make it a decent read. I'd say this book is a good effort from a relatively new author with some good potential, but I'd look for more from future books.

the canterbury tales, by GEOFFREY CHAUCER

From the back cover: The Canterbury Tales stands conspicuous among the great literary achievements of the Middle Ages. Told by a jovial procession of pilgrims- knight, priest, yeoman, miller, or cook- as they ride towards the shrine of Thomas a Becket, they present a picture of a nation taking shape. The tone of this never-resting comedy is, by turns, learned, fantastic, lewd, pious, and ludicrous. 'Here', as John Dryden said, 'is God's plenty!'

this is the best version for the Kindle (Paperwhite
By hannism
In my humble opinion, this is the best version for the Kindle (Paperwhite, Voyage) or the iPhone (4.7 screen or smaller).

There is also a side-by-side version of this text, which would be better for a Kindle Fire or iPad, iPhone (5.5 screen).

This has a comparative version and a modern version. It is very easy to read and understand. Middle English although poetic, can be overwhelming. The Canterbury Tales is a masterpiece, and deserves a place besides Shakespeare.

Don't buy the Kindle edition
By Em
This is not easy to read in Kindle format. In paperback, it has two translations: one in Middle English, the other in Modern English. These are displayed side by side, with the earlier English on the left, Modern on the right. When it comes to the Kindle edition, there are no breaks between these translations. It switches back and forth without any notice, making it really difficult to follow. It would be alright if we could view it page by page (in it's original format), but without that option it's harder to understand. (Yes, it's obvious which part is which, but finding where it stops and starts takes away from the reading experience. It's too choppy.)
In short, buy the paperback or perhaps a different Kindle edition. The format makes this a challenge to read.

good value for a nice edition
By J. Janssen
If you're looking for a fairly complete (includes The Parson's Tale) hardcover edition of Chaucer's unfinished masterpiece you could do far worse than this effort by Chartwell Books. The modern translation is by Frank Ernest Hill and is serviceable, if not considered particularly trendy by Chaucer buffs (try the Hackett Publishing edition w/ the Joseph Glaser translation if you want trendy). It includes a number of facsimile title pages (in B&W) from the exalted Kelmscott Chaucer published by William Morris in 1896. The woodblock prints were created by Edward Burne-Jones and add to the telling of each tale. Most include snippets of Chaucer's original middle english text.

This is a reader's edition in modern prose and should not be confused with the Riverside Chaucer or other academic publications. It's oversize, sturdily bound and very attractive to boot. At less than $19* it's highly recommended.

* As a point of info for prospective purchasers; this volume is readily available from a variety of sellers and amazon is very price competitive when the volume is in stock. However, when the book was out of stock for the last month or so a flurry of "marketplace vultures" swept in charging $50 & up for "new" copies. This is NOT the "Kelmscott Chaucer" that has been reintroduced; though it is a facsimile and a very nice edition. Don't be fooled and don't pay more than $20 for it. The reintroduced Kelmscott (monochrome) sells for about $40 and is still available.

Royally Screwed (Royally Series), by Emma Chase

Nicholas Arthur Frederick Edward Pembrook, Crowned Prince of Wessco, aka “His Royal Hotness,” is wickedly charming, devastatingly handsome, and unabashedly arrogant―hard not to be when people are constantly bowing down to you.

Then, one snowy night in Manhattan, the prince meets a dark haired beauty who doesn’t bow down. Instead, she throws a pie in his face.

Nicholas wants to find out if she tastes as good as her pie, and this heir apparent is used to getting what he wants.

Dating a prince isn’t what waitress Olivia Hammond ever imagined it would be.
There’s a disapproving queen, a wildly inappropriate spare heir, relentless paparazzi, and brutal public scrutiny. While they’ve traded in horse drawn carriages for Rolls Royces and haven’t chopped anyone’s head off lately―the royals are far from accepting of this commoner.

But to Olivia―Nicholas is worth it.

Nicholas grew up with the whole world watching, and now Marriage Watch is in full force. In the end, Nicholas has to decide who he is and, more importantly, who he wants to be: a King... or the man who gets to love Olivia forever.

Hilarious Forbidden Prince/Commoner Romance
By Danielle
Oh God. That was good.

Hilarious. And sexy. Angsty. And soo romantic.

And while I love Tangled by Emma Chase, I still felt like I was missing something since it was only told in the hero's Pov. This one was told in both the hero's and the heroine's. So it was perfect.

Olivia owns a coffee shop/bakery and she has a hard time making ends meet. Her father has been an alcoholic since her mother died, and her sister, Ellie, is hilarious. Well, in walks Nicholas, Prince of Wessco, and he being drunk off his ass, or I should say 'pissed' because British accent, people, he makes her a very inappropriate offer, for a lot of money.
(which I would have accepted, but that's beside the point)

Naturally Olivia throws a pie in his face.

But Nicolas can't stop thinking about the little coffee-shop waitress, and he wears her down until she agrees to go on a date with him.
The sexual tension is off the flippin' charts. I was like mesmerized, waiting for them to have that first moment.

I fell in love with every character in this book. Henry - ha - can't wait for his story. A party-boy to the extreme, but always hilariously sarcastic.

Nicholas is a great hero. He is sort of an egotistical ass in the beginning because of his unfortunate situation, and being 'pissed' hehe I love this Brit word for drunk. But he always acted like he cared for Olivia, and went out of the way to make her feel comfortable.
There is very little OM drama. But the whole premise of the book is that they are going to spend the summer with each other until they have to split ways because Nicholas has an obligation to marry a Wessco citizen with blue blood and she has to be a virgin- do they even make those anymore?

Anyway, he is supposed to be looking for this bride while he is spending the summer with Olivia, so that might bother some people.

This was a surprising angsty story, and my stomach was in knots quite a few times. The writing was fantastic and hilarious, but anyone who reads Emma Chase knows that. One of my best novels by her to date!

A royally addicting read! So much to love about this modern-day, not-even-close-to-clique, cinderella story.
By DaVinciKittie
Being a fan of several of Emma Chase's previous books, I was very excited about this one. Extravagance? Check. Alpha male with an attitude? Check. Can't-keep-me-down heroine with a heart of gold? Check! Royally Screwed has all that, and so many great moments. I absolutely adored this book. Here's why...

This story is DELICIOUS! The first thing that really grabbed my attention--aside from Emma Chase's delightful male perspective storytelling voice (something that keeps me coming back book after book)--is just how ROYAL the royals actually sound on page. That posh, upper crust Brit-Scot accent practically dripped off the screen of my ereader, the requisite titles and precious jewels present in all but name.

Nicholas and Olivia jump right into the drama when he strides into her coffee shop and makes quite the indecent proposal. These two banter so naturally that any serious conversation stands out starkly.

Royally Screwed is unapologetically a Cinderella story, and it flips the saved-by-a-prince trope on its head. And—of course—Prince Nicholas dances, drives motorcycles, flies helicopters, prepares sushi, and woos small children with natural grace. And he's HOT. And lusty. Even Disney couldn't pen a more ideal prince (uh, minus the 'lusty' part... you know what I mean!).

Nicholas is a commanding man, with confidence and authority born of a lifetime of privilege. But he's also unexpectedly insightful and kind under all that sass and charm.

Emma Chase is one of my go-to authors for a guaranteed good time. Whether I'm in the mood for charm, humor, sass, physical comedy, or just really hot sex, this lady delivers. And Royally Screwed is everything I expected and more. The sex scenes—even the latent chemistry between the characters—are effortlessly scorching. These are the kind of people I would genuinely like to spend time with, and the plot cleverly spins an age-old, much loved trope.

The book also smoothly sets up some of the (extremely likeable and appealing) secondary characters for their own stories later in the series. Oh Prince Henry, how I look forward to watching your future bride walk right past all that charm and force you into facing your demons. And Ellie is just a storm of energy and youthful determination; she'll make some perpetually tired man very happy.

Royally Screwed is a wild ride, with such epic emotional highs and then devastating lows that I could not tear myself away. I devoured this book in less than a day! I ached with and for Nicholas and Olivia.

This story is an absolute delight, a guaranteed roller coaster of passion and privilege and charm and want and lust and soft hearts in gilded cages. Author Emma Chase had me laughing and crying and yearning throughout the entire read. Royally Screwed is easily one of the best romances of 2016.

PS - If you're new to Emma Chase's fab style, go back and check out Tangled. It was a GraveTells 2013 top pick and I still love it!

A royal success !!!!
By Cheryl Ann Avola
"Infamy is temporary, celebrity is fleeting but royalty....royalty is forever."

HEREY HEREY............this is a notice to all romance writers out there today, Emma Chase has royally screwed you !!!!

I should really say she royally screwed me. It will be hard to find another book as entertaining as Royally Screwed is!!!

Yes folks, she did it again. Whether she creates sexy bankers, arrogant lawyers or hot as hell royalty, Emma does the male POV to perfection, makes me question who she was in another life.
As always she pairs these bigger than life men with equally ferocious and gorgeous females who reign them in and make them see stars. Emma Chase's one-liners are on par with the best comedic banter written. She can crack me up, make me swoon or cry a river with a turn of the page.

Nicholas and Olivia's fairy tale romance is awesome!! They will forever be engrained on my favorite fictional couples list, right beside Drew and Kate. They are royal perfection to be read and read again and when you are done with them, we will hopefully not have a long wait to dive into Prince Henry's fun loving and irreverent life. Emma this book is a royal prize. I bow to you !!!

Very Last First Time, by Jan Andrews

Eva Padlyat lived in an Inuit village on Ungava Vat in northern Canada. In winter, when people wanted mussels to eat, they searched along the bottom of the seabed. Eva had often walked on the bottom, helping her mother, but today – for the very first time – she was to go down below the thick sea ice herself. Her mother went with her to the shore and out onto the ice. The time was just right. The outgoing tide had pulled the seawater away, leaving only the ice above and the rock-strewn seabed below.
Eva lowered herself through a hole in the ice and, by candlelight, had soon gathered a pan full of mussels. There was still time to explore, she decided. But she stumbled and her candle went out. She was alone in the darkness, and the tide had turned. When, at the end of her adventure, she is safe with her mother again on top of the ice, she says, "that was my very last first time for walking alone on the bottom of the sea."

From Publishers Weekly
In search of mussels while the tide is out, an Inuit girl walks alone beneath the ice of the frozen ocean, knowing she will never do it-for the first time-again. Pointillist paintings in purple and yellow emphasize the beauty of her undersea adventure. Ages 5-8.
Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3 Eva Padlyat had often walked on the bottom of the sea with her mother. This extraordinary-sounding feat is routine for the Inuits of Northern Canada, who lower themselves through the thick winter ice at low tide to search for mussels on the ocean floor. It is now time for Eva's first trip under the ice alone. She and her mother pull their sleds across the snow until they find a place to chisel a hole; then Eva carefully lowers herself into the darkness. Lighting a candle, she begins to look for mussels; she then goes exploring. When she hears the tide coming in and drops her candle, she feels panicky, but she soon finds her matches and another candle to light her way back to the ice hole. On the surface of the ice once again, Eva sums up her adventure as her "very last first time" for walking alone on the ocean floor. This look at Eskimo life today combines the ancient custom of collecting mussels with modern features such as airplanes and snowmobiles. The story is well-developed, with just the right amount of suspense. The watercolor illustrations are somewhat uneven in quality; the colors in the land scenes are rather garish, and some figures are awkwardly proportioned. The eerie shades of the ocean floor are quite effective, however, and the strange seascapes lend an air of unreality. Very Last First Time is an intriguing view of a little-known way of life. A Fascinating Story that I found through Five In a Row
By Learning All The Time
My children (1st & 2nd grade) really love this book. The premise had them leaping off the bed in amazement - "She goes under the SEA??? The ice is over her HEAD???? She goes by HERSELF????"

Every detail was interesting to them - the tools used to hack under the ice, the mother letting her child go alone, the small Inuit homes, Eva living in a land where no trees grew - and they had so many questions - most of which were answered by the end of the story.

We used the book to talk about:

1. mussels and how they grow & live,

2. tides, what causes them and how much the water level can vary between high tide and low tide,

3. the climate in northern Canada

4. the Inuits,

5. emergencies - what happens initially to our bodies when we are afraid, and what we should try to do so that we can get out of our emergency safely, and

6. pointillism and the artist Seraut, and we made our own pointillism art masterpieces with Q-tips and paint.

I did search the Internet for actual photographs of what Eva might have seen, but I couldn't find a single one! I couldn't find other references to the Inuit walking under the ice either. I would have loved to have shown those to my children.

Wonderful - a genuine adventure for young girls.
By A Customer
This is one of the best books for young girls that I have come across. A young Inuit girl is sent under the ice at low tide to collect muscles for the family.. this time by herself. She gets distracted, the candles burn out leaving her in darkness just as she starts to hear the water returning. What an adventure. I buy this book as a gift whenever I need a present for a beginner reader girl.

The Evil of Bananas and Other Curious Stories
By Gingerbreadforest
In this book you will find information about cursed artifacts, treasure laden tombs, murderous winged deer, the world's rarest tree, labyrinths, lost cities, an untranslatable manuscript, buried treasure, and unicorns of the sea.

The chapters of this book include:
Mysterious, Magical and Weird People
Mythical Monsters, Ghosts and Things That Go Bump in the Night
Magical Places of Legends and Reality
Flying Monsters, Mysteries, Odd Happenings, Strange Sightings and Legends
Mysteries of the Deep
Strange Artifacts, Buildings, Maps and Writings
Tales of Secret Treasure
The Reality of Legends and Myths

As the title states, this book is a "Compendium of Monsters, Myths and Legends". Each chapter is filled with short reports of key information for each topic. The overviews are brief with enough information to be satisfying, but leave room to follow up on favorite subjects. This is the kind of book you can escape into and is a great resource of odd information that fires up the imagination. I have been reading these kind of books for years - books that specialize in Forteana, legends, creatures and the unexplained - and happily I found many stories that were new to me. I love this book.

Finally...
By EZE
It's about time a book like this was made. It's a nice little hard cover book packed with obscure information, stories, and theories. It covers Monsters, Myths, and Legends from every culture you can think of and every time period. I find this sort of stuff interesting as someone who loves to write fiction. It's over 384 pages long, it has a few illustrations in black and white nothing too fancy but also nothing that one would consider childish. A lot of the illustrations seem to be scans from other time periods so they are probably legit.

This book will make for great bathroom reading or as a little something to entertain yourself with if you have some time to kill. It's broken up into little sections so you can jump around any page on whatever chapter you are and start reading about something else right away. It looks great on a shelf and is a fine addition to any old school adventurer library. 5 stars. Highly recommend.

A great little gem for lovers of mythology and folklore!
By Vanessa
First off, this may be a small book, about 5.5in x 8in, but it's packed full of interesting facts about mythology and the stuff of legends--definitely enough to quench that thirst for the odd. The thing that lured me in at first was actually the cover (it's beautiful!) featuring restored scans of vintage illustrations. The text is conveniently separated into sections like "Tales of Secret Treasure" and "Mysteries of the Deep". Text is a bit on the small side, though it's not a problem for me, it might be for some.

As another reviewer said, it's a great bathroom read or way to kill time and learn a few things while you're at it. I personally love bringing this book with me on my commute to school. (Subway rides have never been so frought with possibility... Oh the monsters that could be lurking just about the bend!) ;)

It is a dangerous, addictive white powder that can be found in abundance throughout this country. It is not illegal. In fact, it is available near playgrounds, schools, and workplaces. It is in practically everything we eat and drink, and once we are hooked on it, the cravings can be overwhelming. This white substance of abuse is sugar.

Over two decades ago, Nancy Appleton’s Lick the Sugar Habit exposed the health dangers of America’s high-sugar diet. Now, in Suicide by Sugar, Appleton, along with journalist G.N. Jacobs, presents a broader view of the problems caused by our favorite ingredient. The authors offer startling facts that link a range of disorders―from dementia and hypoglycemia to obesity and cancer―to our growing sugar addiction. Rounding out the book is a sound diet plan along with a number of recipes for sweet, easy-to prepare dishes―all made without sugar or fruit.

Suicide by Sugar shines a bright light on our nation’s addiction and helps us begin the journey toward health.

Some of the information you’ll pick up along this journey will shock you, other information will enlighten you, but above all, you will finish the journey knowing exactly what you can do to avoid committing suicide by sugar.

Before you begin your journey, you should know that today, when people say “sugar” or “sucrose,” they are usually referring to the sweetener made by beet, cane, and corn. The sugar and corn sweetener industries, however, do not do this. To the industries, “sugar” comes from beet or cane, not corn. “Sweetener” or “corn sweetener,” to the industries, means it comes from corn. In this book, I use the word “sugar” to mean the substance that comes from beet, cane, and corn, except in the section titled “Fructose Roulette” (see page 60), where I speak specifically about sugar (beet or cane) and corn sweetener.

Your journey begins with my story. As a sugar addict, I came close to committing sugar suicide.  I would quit but then would go back to sugar, and you probably will also. Don’t blame yourself. Just say, “Tomorrow will be a better day,” and it will. Many of you will identify with my story. Over the years, I have heard variations of my story from many people.

The core of my early work started from the proposition that many people who eat too much sugar are sick too much of the time. I certainly was. After many years of abusing my body with sugar (unknowingly), I finally came to the conclusion that sugar must do something bad to the immune system. I researched a concept called homeostasis (the balance of all the systems in the body), and bingo, the whole story came together. I found out that sugar upsets this delicate balance in the body. I also learned what sugar does to the immune system.

The next stop along your journey will take you into new territory. First, you will learn all the ways sugar is ruining your health. Next, I will tell you exactly what I discovered about sugar’s effect on homeostasis and the immune system.  Then, you will find out about the glycemic index, glycemic load, and the importance of not taking an oral glucose tolerance test. You will also learn about Ensure and Pediasure, and you’ll find out some information about soft drinks that you may not want to know. Additionally, you will discover how much natural sugar is in many products and how much sugar is added. There are also a few misconceptions about chocolate that are documented.

Next, I explain that sugar and its cousins (like honey, maple syrup, corn syrup, fructose, glucose, and others) can lead to a host of diseases. You will learn how sugar feeds cancer, dementia, and epilepsy, to name a few. Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is explained in depth.

Now that you have found out what sugar does to the body, you will find out how to remove this sugar and keep it out of your body.  There is a whole section on helping you get and stay healthy with food plans, suggestions for snacks, and recipes to soothe the sweet tooth. And there is more―much more.

Research into sugar has exploded in recent years, and it’s not just crank nutritionists, dentists, and chemists doing the work―a few MDs are getting into the act as well. This represents a titanic shift in medical opinion, at least for the average doctor on the street. Even though the American Medical Association (AMA) has not directly come out against sugar, some of the associations for the many specialties contained within the AMA have made statements about sugar. Clearly, it is a case of waiting for the dinosaurs to die off.

So read on, dear reader, to start your journey and find out information that you did not know existed about sugar. If by the end of this book you haven’t decided to lick your sugar habit, illness and a long, slow death may result―truly Suicide by Sugar.

Packed with info, Backed by science, Easy to read---wil inspire you to avoid the most addictive substance in the world!
By Susan Schenck
Sugar addiction, according to studies cited by Appleton & Jacobs, is more addictive than cocaine! If someone has never had an addiction to sugar he or she must have very enlightened parents--or be living in the rural area of some remote part of the world.

On p. 10 the authors list 31 types of sugar. Some are ones many of us have thought of as healthful, such as agave, honey, molasses, raw sugar and maple syrup. But just because they are natural doesn't mean they are healthful.

Chapter 2 lists 140 reasons why sugar is ruining our health. Each of these has footnotes at the back with scientific studies to back them up. Chapter 3 shows how sugar throws off our body's homeostasis, disrupting the balance of minerals. Chapter 4 teaches us about how sugar destabilizes our blood sugar, as we learn about glycemic index, glycemic load, 8 things to consider when choosing a carbohydrate, as well as the dangers of the oral glucose tolerance test and better alternatives to use.

In chapter 5 we get the hard facts about soft drinks (you really won't want to have another one after reading this, I promise!) We learn how to calculate our BMI (body mass index) to see if we are overweight, or even obese. (Currently 74.1% of Americans are overweight!) We learn to interpret deceptive labels, and to calculate the number of teaspoons of sugar in a product. We uncover the horrors of high fructose corn syrup, and how it has a double whammy in creating the obesity epidemic: it becomes fat faster than glucose or sucrose, and it releases the hormone ghrelin which stimulates the appetite. We also discover the alarming truth of what happens when you cook food--how it creates toxic byproducts called AGEs that age you. (If you must cook, steam at low temperatures, and use water.) As the author of a raw food diet book, I was pleasantly surprised that Nancy went into such detail about this.

Chapter 6 discusses some of the major sugar-related diseases and conditions: obesity, hypoglycemia, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, dementia, cancer and even epilepsy. Chapter 7 gives us the strategies to fight sugar addiction, choosing from 3 different food plans that involve 5 food categories. There are a few recipes that include sweet potatoes and beets. (When we get off the intense sugars, vegetables like these taste very sweet and satisfying!)

At the end of the book is a glossary, resource guide, recommended reading, and plenty of footnotes to support the authors' claims. There is also a page on how to order a Body Monitor Test Kit which helps you figure out, through urine tests you do at home, whether your body is in homeostasis or not.

This book is easy to read and a must for the vast majority of eaters--carnivores, frugivores, vegetarians, vegans, etc. All parents and teachers need to read this, no matter how much they think they know about the dangers of sugar.

If only everyone would read this and accept the message
By Joseph P. Nicholson
I was a fan of Lick the Sugar Habit. I've read it and re-read it for motivation. I've also read Sugar blues, Sugar Busters and every other anti-sugar book. After 20 years of informally studying nutrition and trying many different ways of eating I have definately come to the conclusion that SUGAR is the main reason for the poor health that plagues so many of us. It has really only been used in significant qualtity for the last 100 years. Prior to that it was a treat to be consumed in small quantities on rare ocassions. Cancer, Heart Disease, Obesity?? They are rocketing off the charts...especially in the last couple of decades. The rise in these diseases correlates quite perfectly to the rise in Sugar consumption. The addition of HFCS in the mid 70's really added fuel to the fire.

The solution to so much of our suffering (and impending financial doom as we struggle to pay for the costs associated with these diseases) is ridiculously simple......return to a sugar free whole foods diet like the one that sustained our ancestors for MILLIONS of years. Sugar IS a drug. It is added to so many processed foods and the makers of those foods know exactlly what they are doing. They need to get you hooked...and they have. Of all the people I know, I can't think of one who doesn't eat mostly processed sugared foods. Bring it up in conversation and they will acknowledge that their diet sucks but no one wants to take any REAL steps at correcting it. I thinks so many people have associated suffering/deprivation with improving their diet. This is because so many people are making half assed changes. Sugar is a drug and the only way to free yourself from its grasp it to quit it completely. Can an alcoholic "cut back"....No. Of course not. My only problem with Suicide by Sugar is that it seems to preach a bit of moderation when it should be preaching abstinance. Some of the foods suggested in the food plans are also not things I'd consider eating as my first choice....too many crappy carbs as opposed to good ones. Overall the book is awesome though.

Very informative. Definitely worth the read.
By Valerie Dean
The case is made against sugar. The problem is that sugar is so addictive your brain tells you not to eat it and yet you crave it. A continual struggle but if you can overcome using sugar your health will improve enormously.

Honorable Company
By Stef
I had ordered this book from MediaMall Retail, but it never made it to my doorstep. I was very disappointed as I couldn't wait to start making my tropical and exotic sugar flowers. When the Company learned that I did not receive it, they attempted to contact me several times to clear the matter up. I was having problems receiving their notifications, but eventually got them. After contacting them, they immediately resolved and refunded my loss, and gave me a "Goodwill" refund. This Company is honorable and I hope they'll do business with me in the future.

And that's the secret of this excellent, must-read book
By Stuart Cross, Morgan Cross Consulting
It's often said that leaders are born, not made, and that you've either got the right stuff for leadership or you haven't. In this book, Bates skilfully debunks this notion, giving managers and leaders at all levels and all abilities the potential to develop, to grow and to lead. Bates breaks down leadership and executive presence into three key dimensions - character, substance and style - and then identifies and defines further facets. This structured approach, using identifiable attributes and behaviors, has already helped me to work with my own consulting clients to agree specific, measurable improvement opportunities. And that's the secret of this excellent, must-read book: it helps you take concrete actions. All The Leader You Can Be will help you create your own customized path to becoming a great leader.

A nuanced view of what it takes to be a leader - with surprising information for women leaders
By Mary G
I especially recommend this book for coaches who work with senior executives on a range of leadership issues, not just on what is traditionally viewed as "executive presence". The unique contribution of the work being done by Suzanne Bates is to both widen and clarify our understanding of the factors that define executive presence. I find the concepts and stories in the book are invaluable for quickly starting a positive developmental conversation with leaders at all levels, but especially those at the top. I have also found that her research on how women leaders are perceived has real value for those who think "lack of confidence" is a "woman's problem". The book is worth adding to your coaching library for that section alone!
