I just want to give this book a shoutout for being AMAZING. It is literally an encyclopedia for food styling. She has every food, what could happen to it, how to fix it, how to make it look best, and what products to use to fix it. This is extremely time saving for people like me who are new to food blogging and can reference everything before starting a recipe. Now, I haven't actually tried her different techniques but she's been in the business along time so I'm sure they are effective. Don't be scared off by the beginning which is very general info on styling in general. Get past that and you'll find the goods. Thanks, Delores!!

Highly recommended...

Use this book as a reference for food styling in our R&D lab. It has helped us improve our photography for Social media and print. Has an exhaustive list of tools, foods, preparation techniques, special effects (like condensation, steam, char, etc.), challenging situations, funny anecdotes from her past that can serve as bad examples or cautionary tales, propping, working with photographers, customers and for yourself, and many other topics. Like any reference, it has its perspective, and it's just one woman's eyes, but she's seen a lot so it's a valuable source of information. Be aware though that other perspectives are out there, and the market can and will shift so things that apply here as desirable may become dated but many of the tools and techniques will never change unless we start eating something entirely different...like pills or gels rather than real food. Like with any skill though, having the information doesn't guarantee success you've got to practice and apply your skills regularly or your results may decline.

Worth the money

As a teacher I try and bring in different professionals so that the kids can speak to the people in the profession and be exposed to all sides of completing the job. I found a food stylist who was willing to come in a speak to the kids and she mentioned the value of the book. She had in fact studied with the author. Based on her recommendation I purchased this book and have been very satisfied with the results. It is easy to read, jam packed fl
Of information for the aspiring food stylist and inspirational in its review of the history of the professional and the attributes it takes to be successful in the profession. I will definitely be sharing this information with my middle school students.

Widely considered to be one of the finest American painters of his generation, Brian Rutenberg has spent forty years honing a distinctive method of compressing the rich color and form of his native coastal South Carolina into complex landscape paintings that imbue material reality with a deep sense of place. He is a Fulbright Scholar, a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellow, a Basil Alkazzi USA Award recipient, an Irish Museum of Modern Art residency programme participant, and he has had over two hundred exhibitions throughout North America and in Europe.  Rutenberg's paintings are in private collections all over the world and are included in such museum collections as the Butler Institute of American Art, Yale University Art Gallery, the Bronx Museum of Arts, Provincetown Art Association and Museum, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, Peabody Essex Museum of Art, Greenville County Museum of Art, and many others. An intimate journey with a renowned artist

While reading this book I felt I was being led on an intimate journey to the heart of an artist. Mr. Rutenberg shares his life from when he was a very young child walking in the garden with his grandfather where he would put his face in the flowers and absorb the colors, to his current life in New York where he says his favorite walk is through Central Park to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He says he never aspired to be an artist. He started drawing in first grade, painting in fourth, and declared himself an artist at ten. Along with telling his personal story Mr. Rutenberg talks about art and what it means to him to be an artist. He shares such insights as “the key to color is to try everything without scrutiny, just play. You can't think color; you have to see it.” and “Give your work time. It doesn't matter where you got it, only where you take it.”
There is a lot of good, thoughtful information about art within the pages of this book; written by an artist for artists. I recommend this book.

Brian's Story

"Clear Seeing Place: Studio Visits" by Brian Rutenberg is one of the most introspective books I have ever read. Born and raised in the Low Country of coastal South Carolina, he takes us through very specific moments that unveiled the artist within him. Making his way to NYC when he was a bit older, he shares the various trials he faced but from a very down-to-earth, raw perspective. Brian discusses exactly what a painter should and should not think about when it comes to painting. He elaborates about what painting is and is not and compares it to other pieces of art like photography. As someone who hasn't painted beyond an art class assignment, I feel as though his perspective will allow me to look at an art gallery with newfound perspective. I believe that any artist stands a lot to gain from this book; I appreciate the genuine story of his life. I am sure his children will love reading it when they are older too!

it's like sitting down with a friend for a talk about art...

Brian Rutenberg is a contemporary artist that hosts a series on YouTube called "Studio Visits." Part autobiographical musings, part art theory, part talking about process, it's like sitting down with a friend for a talk about what it means to make art -- more the stuff of the late night coffeehouse than of the lecture hall. I've been painting for a couple of years and find these talks very motivational. There's a lot out there about how to paint or on art history but insights into a painter's mind are few and far between.

Clear Seeing Place is an extension of the video series. Brian's writing flows and his enthusiasm for art is infectious. I see this book having a permanent place on my painting table for whenever I need inspiration or a kick in the pants. It occupies the same place for me as books like Bayles and Orland's Art and Fear or Joe Fig's Inside the Painter's Studio

Still imperfect, still wonderful, still unmatched. Buy it!

The Diccionario Enciclopédico de Gastronomia Mexicana'a second edition is an expanded and revised version of the first, which is long out of print, hard to find used and very expensive when found. The first edition, very much a one-man job, was published in hard cover and loose leaf in forty sixteen page fascicles. The fascicles were accompanied by recipe inserts that make up an excellent cookbook with outstanding discussions of technique.

The second edition is in hardcover only and doesn't incorporate the recipe inserts. This is the only significant loss between the two editions.

The second edition has inputs from and revisions by committees of experts. What they add is worth the book's price, even for people who already have the first edition. Unfortunately chef Muñoz' distinctive voice is somewhat muted in the second edition.

One can quibble with many of the definitions. For example, the committee completely missed that the common name guavina -- several kinds of fish share it -- means Rainbow Trout in Colima. On the plus side, latin names of plants and animals are usually given. This is a great improvement.

Caveats and minor grumbles notwithstanding, there's nothing like the Diccionario Enciclopédico de Gastronomia Mexicana. It is the first place to look when trying to understand what an ingredient used in Mexican cooking is or to see the variety of recipes that share a name and, sometimes, little else. If you want to buy it, be aware is not a cookbook. You would have to be very skilled in the art to cook from it. But if you want to know what ingredients and dishes are, no other reference matches it for depth and breadth.

Nothing in publishing is guaranteed until a book can be purchased but I have it from one of the translators University of Texas Press will publish an English translation real soon now. If you read Spanish and are serious about cooking Mexican food, buy the Larousse edition. If you don't read Spanish, pray that UT Press will deliver.

This is a comprehensive list of traditional and some modern Mexican food with details on origin and main components. Not a cook book that is what youtube is for. I use this to get ideas on what to cook and find out what the real/original ingredients and cooking methods were. And it is in Spanish so get a Latino friend or use Google to translate.

English edition or not?

Not sure if there was an error in shipping, but the copy I received is en Espanol.

I was under the impression that the publication of a revised, updated and expanded version of this amazing tome would also include, for the first time, an English translation. Amazon's product description indicates as such. I'll be sending this copy back as I unfortunately have not yet learned the author's native tongue.

I will update this review if it turns out that there is, in fact, an English edition available. Otherwise, I will quietly sob and curse myself because I still haven't gotten around to studying Spanish.

ALLAN J. LICHTENBERG, PhD, is Professor in the Graduate School in Electrical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. A respected pioneer in the fields of high-temperature plasmas, plasma discharges, and nonlinear dynamics, he has published about 150 articles in these areas. In addition to the books coauthored with Professor Lieberman, he has written an earlier monograph Phase-Space Dynamics of Particles (Wiley).

and it is better to me for understanding the material

Correlates with Lippincott's Illustrate Reviews Biochemistry very tightly. I used Lippincott's as a mini-textbook (supplemented school's syllabus), and it is better to me for understanding the material, but BRS is far more conducive for review, with its high-yield outline format and more USMLE-like questions. The questions are excellent, ULMLE-type, and include additional online questions. Clinical correlates are nearly the same in each review book, although cursory in both (better covered in First AId Cases) - I looked up each disease mentioned while studying for class in a pathology text (Robbins or Rubin's) to better understand the manifestations/dx/tx. There are a few errors in BRS (iron response element regulatory mechanism, etc.). I don't know how Rapid Review Biochemistry compares.

Very concise book covering molecular biology and genetics

If you want a more thorough yet concise enough review book for medical Biochemistry, go for LIR.
If you want one with broad coverage of molecular biology and genetics and does not want to purchase a textbook for the topic, go for BRS Review.
This book is more on genetics and molecular biology. I like the point-form arrangement of the book which makes reading easier. Moreover, there are abundant multiple choice exercises behind each chapter with answers, facilitating students' learning of the subject.
This book is not very thick, but I'm sure it'll be quite useful.

I wish I knew about this book before grad micro...

The assigned text in my graduate micro theory class was Mas-Collel/Whinston/Green (MWG), a book that I couldn't wait to get rid of. However, I have a much better appreciation of MWG after having read Jehle and Reny (JR). JR is strong where MWG is weak and vice versa. JR provides a clear, self-contained introduction to key concepts in advanced micromicroeconomic theory but is not comprehensive in its coverage. MWG on the other hand is more terse and requires a greater level of math preparation, but is truly the encyclopedia of micro. Regarding the comments of the disappointed reader from Cambridge MA, it's true that there are not many applications in J&R, but that's not really the point of this book. As the title indicates, this is a theory book. Nicolson's or even Varian's intermediate texts are good places to look for applications. But for grad micro theory, I would recommend reading both JR and MWG, in that order.

The best book for Micro

Firstable, this is a Graduate Micro book, nobody could properly say that it is not good if she is trying to get some stuff of this topic for the first time, this is not the goal of this book, it was created to make first year econ-grad students lives better.
I used MWG (Mas Colell) for the first semester Micro of the Phd program and most of my partners and I hated it, it is so complicated and has some excessive and wording detail for even simple things, however I should recognize that it is more complete than the rest of books, now in the second Micro we're using Jehle and Reny and we love it, to be honest this is the best book in Micro now (according to my knowledge and point of view), we also use Silberberg sometimes (very good) and Varian (has a lot of gaps even though it is easy to understand too) but this is the best, it is not probably as complete as MWG but it is more neat, precise and far more understandable, general equilibrium part has one third of the pages of MWG but it is better, it doesn't have Offer curves neither other minor things but the proofs of existence of Walrasian equilibrium and the welfare theorems are incredibly powerful and far shorter than those of MWG. For Game Theory it is also very very good, clear and precise without excessive wording.
I almost forgot....the Math appendix is the best I've ever found in any other Micro book, it gives you precisely what you need to get into the business.
This book is like "pure gold" no regrets of any kind.

it iseasy to read and ordered

The book is quite intuitive, covers a lot of material that an beginning graduate student should know. Lot of exercises help a lot and just the most important theorems are proved in the text.

Seems to be quite similar to the Mass-Collel, Whinston and Green MWG text. MWG is a great book, but really needs a lot of work in special at the exercises and examples, being that cover a lot of material in some points there are so many assumptions for proofs that some of them are confusing and sometimes proofs are not complete. I feel this is the difference with this book, this books cares a bit more at the assumptions of theorems, somehow reorganizing much of the same content that appears at MWG and making some proofs less general but more harmonic with the content of the book.

I recomend it to use as a complement of MWG, that for me even considering the small bad points MWG continues being the best book for microeconomic theory.

Must Have for ATLS

Purchased used. Arrived in Like New Condition. ATLS app had not been activated by previous owner so I was able download and sign in on my iPad. Lots of material. Numerous references at the end of chapters for additional study. Bright readable text with pleasing layout.
I'm a registered nurse who wishes to pass the ATLS exam and get the certification, its needed for a position I want to apply to next year. I'm finding that ATLS courses usually have long waiting lists to attend especially if the course is at another institution than your own. The manuals are usually not sent out until a few weeks be fore the course. I wanted to have longer to prepare. There is a new text provided with the course and I will sell it online after the course.

Required reading for ATLS course

Text (9th ed) was generally as expected. Purchased from Amazon Marketplace in Very Good condition. Required for ATLS provider course. Covers all topics required to successfully complete the ATLS course. I feel future editions should provide more examples of imaging, triage scenarios, and re-write their procedures sections. All in all, it does the job.

This book arrived used, but in good condition as described by the seller. Overall, the book is a good resource for trauma. I am a Nurse, in an Emergency Nurse Practitioner program. The book is a great resource for providers working in a trauma setting.

Decent Embryo book

This is a decent review but that is it. If your trying to learn any of the topics for the first time I would suggest Langmans. I've only really read 2 chapters and there has been a few typos. If you haven't read langman's or have a very strong background in embryo this book is probably not for you.

The book is very simplistic and meant as a quick overview of embryological development. I find myself frequently consulting a textbook for clarification, but the book does provide a good, quick review of the high yield concepts in embryology.

Kimball Group's last book doesn't disappoint

I've enjoyed reading the Kimball Group's design tips on their site for years. As a wonderful parting shot before retiring the group, all those nuggets have been collected and conformed into this wonderful anthology. The last chapter is particularly rewarding to read, as it consists of one final article from each of the four surviving members. They don't disappoint!
