Although as of press time, Carrie Denny had not yet planned her own wedding, she’s been in the biz for years as editor of Philadelphia magazine’s bridal publication, Philadelphia Wedding. So helpful - Even the fiance loves it!

After reading the other reviews, I got this to help me plan my wedding (the humor was a huge sell for me - Keeping the wedding planning fun and low-stress is key!). The inserts and planning forms are so helpful and really help keep me organized, all the while being reassuring.

The best part -- My fiance got a hold of the book one day and couldn't put it down!! He's read through more than I have, and really thought the advice was helpful. I ended up buying him the companion "Groom's Instruction Manual" too. :)

It's succinct, informative, and witty...I'd recommend for any bride!

Bought this along with the Groom & Newlywed manuals as a gift for my sister. Read them myself before I give them to her and I would have liked the Bride manual myself when I was engaged. It has some handy hints & tips as well as sensible advice on how to deal with certain situations.

May be your first book on Options

This book assumes that the reader already have familiarity with stocks, and would like to move further, to options. The author doesn't take into account the fundamental analysis of the underlying security, however, there is a chapter about the technical analysis. In my point of view, it is a drawback: a reader already familiar with the stock market may be aware of the technical analysis, so either both technical and fundamental need to be covered or none.

The book covers three types of options: stock options, index options, and ETF options. There is a separate chapter devoted to ETFs, but a reader already familiar with a stock market will get no benefit from this chapter.

The book is printed with quite a large font have quite much space around the text, so it is quick to read. This may be a good introductory book to options. It is pretty basic and easy to understand, however, it fails to address an important technique of selling puts as a way of buying the underlying security. Warren Buffett obtains most of his stock holdings through selling puts. He got most of his Coca-Cola Holdings this way, and, recently, Burlington Northern Santa Fe.

If you need a much deeper book on options, I would recommend "The Options Course" by the same author. It doesn't have the drawbacks above mentioned, very friendly and easy to understand, although it is a much lengthier read.

Good for wrapping up loose ends

What this book lacks in detail, it makes in subject completeness.

There are dozens and dozens of great websites out there describing options and trading strategies in far better depth and completeness than this book. So, if you're looking for complex spreads or techniques, this book will not satisfy you.

However, online searches are so saturated in trading strategies that it's actually difficult to become aware of real world transactional details (like, "who are the market makers? how does assignment work?"). this book nicely wraps up those "loose ends" that are hardly ever mentioned on your favorite search engine.

You guys have judged this too harshly

Options is an area that is very complex, and, if anything, the author dumbed it down too much. There are a lot of ways to make mistakes with options.

This book does a good job of covering the basics and beyond. If you are having trouble understanding parts of it, don't blame the book. The subject matter is difficult for those new to it. Take your time with this material. Unlike other areas of study, being wrong in options can cost you money. While the author lists some pros and cons with paper trading, I found it to be useful for my own learning. Look for a brokerage that offers this. This will also help you get used to the mechanics of opening and closing positions without risking actual money.

Also, you do not have to master the numerous strategies discussed in the book to make use of options. You can buy single calls and puts and gain leverage while keeping thigs simple.

The author has written more advanced books when you are ready to dig into the statistics more deeply.

About the Author

Chuck Easttom is a security consultant, author, and trainer. He has authored fourteen other books on programming, Web development, security, and Linux. Chuck holds more than 28 different industry certifications including CISSP, CEH, CHFI, ECSA, CIW Security Analyst, MCSE, MCSA, MCDBA, MCAD, Server+, and more. He has served as a subject matter expert for the Computer Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) in the development or revision of four of their certification tests, including the initial creation of their Security+ certification. He also developed the ECES cryptography certification for the EC Council. Chuck is a frequent guest speaker for computer groups, discussing computer security. Defensless Advice

Just looking at the table of contents made my mouth salivate, because of the range of topics covered. Instead of throwing the reader into the wild world of security, Mr. Eastton starts off with chapter one on Networking. The reason why starting off a security book with networking 101 is important is simply because too many people don't understand the engine that runs the network. The author moves on into deeper topics as he progresses the reader through the book but continues to hammer the importance of knowing networking fundamentals throughout the book.

Like many of the Pearson brand books, each chapter ends with some thought provoking questions and he adds some nice exercises. The questions usually cause you to go and reread that portion of the chapter but it's the exercises that really reenforce the overall purpose of the information. The author isn't selling any certification or didn't seem to me to have an agenda other than provide a decent book on information security.

There is a major problem throughout the book; it must have been sitting on a shelf for a long time before it was actually published. I say this for several reasons and with all the respect in the world for an author with 23 certifications under his belt.

1. Mr Easttom calls a certain group of security professionals “Sneakers” when we actually call them “Penetration Tester” or Certificated Ethical Hackers (CEH). This group of folks break down further into red teams, social engineers, competitive business intelligence analysis and other fancy names depending on what they charge per hour and if they actually have a business address. In a nutshell, their job is to locate weaknesses in your network and report them to you.

2. The book starts off by poking hackers in the eye instead of showing the reader the difference between the types of hackers as he does later on in the book. There is a large problem with the organized crime portion of paid hackers. These hackers operate just like any other business except they have malicious intent as their mission statement. Then there are the state-sponsored hackers, the hactivists, the mafia hackers, the corporate espionage hackers and the disgruntled employees to worry about. None of which were really mentioned in the book.

3. Windows XP is discussed chapters before anything about Windows 8 is mentioned. Granted, there are differing opinions on how many computers are still operating Windows XP but there should be more focus on here and now operating systems.

4. The author talks about Internet Explorer (IE) and Netscape over Firefox, Safari or Chrome. The author links Firefox to Netscape but doesn't even mention any of the security/privacy issues surrounding IE. If you want secure browsing you need to be looking at Tails or Chrome, certainly not IE.

I was surprised to see the author bring up so many commercial products as viable solutions when there are quite a few open source products that have a better track record. Mr. Easttom does discuss what “Open Source” means but leads the reader astray by comparing the source code of volunteers versus closed source code of for-profit companies. Open source software is often just as good or better than commercial software because the people building the open software are doing so in an open environment where others can see and fix vulnerabilities before the product is released. Commercial software is propriety and difficult to detect flaws or vulnerabilities until the product has reached the market.

If the reader were looking for true countermeasures for their network they would be looking for defensive tools like Armitage with Metasploit, Nessus, Nmap, Kali, or even Fedora Security Spins. Snort is given a brief nod for it's intrusion detection capabilities but nothing is mentioned about Wireshark or other packet filtering packages. OphCrack is old news compared to using Python scripts for SQL injections and attacks on Apache servers.

It was nice to see the book covered some Linux security basics. Yes, the Bash vulnerability is a major media affair at the moment but it doesn't bother other 'nix that use Dash like Debian. Then there is big news about USB firmware being compromised. I would not expect that to be in the book because that is fairly new information. The problem is the author didn't tell the reader where to find the Common Vulnerability Enumeration (CVE) database. The CVE is the master collection of every vulnerability detected, the severity level and the impact it would have on your system. A book such as this needs to show the reader where to look for all the dirty little secrets.

The best place to find hacker news is by going into those areas and see what is shaping the next level of attacks. You can keep your hands clean and stick to Lifehacker.com and Network World or you can tighten up your browser security to head over to Hackin9.org, Offensive-Security.com, git-hub.org, Packetstorm.com, or Darknet.org.

Overall, I wish the book went into defending and countermeasures of a network. Instead, it was more of a dictionary description with very few tips or tricks. There were good questions and some great exercises but none of them would help out against an Advanced Persistent Threat (APT). APT wasn't even used as a term in the book. If you are looking for a sword to defend your network, this book is a butter-knife.

Basic intro to Network Security with dated product info

This is very introductory textbook on the topic of Network Security that’s copyrighted 2014 with First Printing in October 2013.Yet, in Chapter 4, “Firewall Practical Applications”, the author uses as an example the Cisco PIX 515E firewall for which Cisco announced End of Life in 2008. That does not make too much sense. Also, the price of the PIX 515E in the book is quoted as between $1800 and $2600 depending on whether it’s new or refurbished. It’s a real stretch that in 2014 or even in 2013 a PIX 515E would have cost that much. As of the writing of this review, February 2015, you can pick up a PIX 515E on E-Bay for as little as $40.

Something does not make sense about this publication given its copyright date. Without exception, all of the chapter references listed in Appendix A are dated 2004 or before. While no one denies that security has a long history and many security principles are simply timeless, a publication on Network Defenses copyrighted 2014 ought to have a sprinkle of more recent references, especially given the evolution of networking and security threats over the last decade.

Having slammed the book for its dated product examples (there are a few more than just the PIX 515E), I would consider it a nice compilation of introductory info on a range of security topics, including encryption and firewall fundamentals, assessing system security, security standards and more. For someone entering the field of network security it is a reasonable starter, reinforced by exercises and multiple choice questions at the end of each chapter. But for a Security Professional, well, if you forgot your security and networking basics, scan through this book for a refresher.

Carol Gray is president of The Gray Center for Social Learning and Understanding in Zeeland, Michigan, a non-profit organization serving people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and those working on their behalf. She is an internationally respected author and speaker with 30 years experience as a teacher and consultant working on behalf of children and adults with ASD. Extremely helpful filled to the brim with tons of social stories to fit any occasion. We were headed on a family vacation that involved lots of experiences outside dear daughter's comfort zone. The social stories were a wonderful resource. Exhaustive selection of stories for any situation.

About the Author
Richard A. Beasley (Deexwudu.oo) is a Raven (Yéil) of the Coho (L'uknax.ádi) Clan. He is a lifelong carver who has worked as a professional artist for nearly thirty years. He apprenticed under Steve Brown, Duane Pasco, Loren White, and the famed Tlingit carver Nathan Jackson. He also took classes from renowned Northwest Coast art expert Bill Holm, professor emeritus of art history and anthropology at the University of Washington, where Beasley earned a bachelor's degree in metal design.

Lots of Pictures explains 3 Vol format

One of the earlier reviewer noted that this three volume set includes significant repeated material concerning culture and tools. This reviewer suggested that rather than being a legitimate three volume bookset, these should have been combined into one book with three project chapters. After receiving my copy of Tlingit Wood Carving: How to Carve a Tlingit Mask, I found this criticism to be particularly unfair. This book contains well over 300 full color photos, illustrating in deep detail every aspect of the creation process. This extensive a color rendering adds significant cost to publishing and more than justifies dividing this into separate books for every project. While not a carver, I found the book incredibly inspiring and may hope to pick up the adze in the future. I also hope they add a volume on creating bentwood boxes and paddles.

Excellent Tutorial

This well illustrated book was very helpful for a young man I have been mentoring. He is fascinated with wooden masks, and used this book to help him create a model and then a full scale Tlingit mask. This book inspired him to connect with his Tlingit heritage, and develop a great deal of self esteem. Excellent illustrations, and step by step explanations, with discussion of cultural significance, and methodology. A practical and useful resource.

There are three books in this series. They are very well illustrated with excellent instructions. With some patience and perseverance you can read, imitate and be successful. The books illustrate a deep respect for the Tlingit culture and an eagerness to share with the reader.

A discursive look at the ongoing transformation of the American landscape. Art critic Lippard (Mixed Blessings, not reviewed, etc.) posits that Americans are rapidly losing their sense of place and their local loyalties as a result of the country's fin-de-siŠcle homogenization, courtesy of look-alike Walmarts and McDonald's, strip malls and housing developments, and thanks as well to hybrid cultural styles that see a new Trump luxury hotel in downtown New York augured in by practitioners of the Chinese art of feng shui, or geomancy. Lippard writes with undisguised nostalgia for a different, more historically aware America; at the top of each text page runs a journal of her life in the little town of Georgetown, Me., where such virtues presumably still obtain. Recognizing that regionalism is a cultural invention and as such somewhat artificial, she explores the possibilities for place-based public art that ``has both roots and reach'' and that honors local history and mores. She also looks into the prospects for preserving that older, idiomatic, vernacular America while allowing that, given their druthers, most people would often rather build for the future than maintain the past. (Only lack of money keeps them from doing so, she writes, quoting a colleague who observes that ``poverty is a wonderful preservative of the past.'') Some of her themes--for instance, ``alienated displacement'' and ``the possibility of a multicentered society,'' whatever that is--grow a little wearisome as they are repeated throughout the text. But on the whole Lippard's narrative is interesting and thoughtful, and her critiques are often delightfully acidic, especially when she deals with enervating planned suburbs and gated communities and the monstrosities that pass for public art today. About the Author
Lucy R. Lippard is an internationally known writer, activist, and curator. She has authored twenty-three books, has curated more than fifty major exhibitions, and holds nine honorary doctorates of fine arts. Her books include The Lure of the Local, Partial Recall, The Pink Glass Swan, Mixed Blessings, On the Beaten Track, and Overlay, all published by The New Press. Lippard is the recipient of numerous awards, most recently the Carolyn Bancroft History Prize from the Denver Public Library and grants from Creative Capital and the Lannan Foundation. Great resource for interdisciplinary artists

If you are a person who cares about places, an artist who is looking for ideas on how to incorporate a place-based ethic in your work, a nomad who longs for a greater sense of rootedness, or an environmentalist who wants to explore new ways to communicate, this is the book for you. The depth and breadth of Lucy Lippard's experience of America is impressive. She has lived in Maine, New York City, and New Mexico, and has collected stories of artists who are reflecting on their relationship to the place they live from around the country. The book is incredibly diverse, looking at the issues of homelessness, the changing face of the American West, the unique personalities of suburbs, rural areas, and big cities (to name just a few topics) through the lens of geography and art.
The book is well written, although it might seem challenging to some. Expect a left-of-center view from a respected and extremely knowledgeable critic and observer of American life.

Not Just for Writers!

I picked this bad boy up at the museumstore at SF Moma. It is a handsome, weighty book, with a beautiful, interesting cover. The book made a good impression on me.
My wife and I decided to buy this book because we have been interested in the theme of "landscape as witness". This is a concept we read about in Nancy Spector's accompanying essay in the Cremaster Cycle Guggeinheim museum catalog. Basically, the idea as it is expressed in Barney interpreted by Spector is that the landscape is a character in the narrative created by art.
As a brief survey of Amazon.com will reveal, Lippard is a well regarded writer on art. Honestly, I'd never heard of her before. This could have something to do with me not being intimately familiar with the New York City art scene or otherwise involved with the art world except as an occasional museum goer. Art is sort of at the periphery of my set of interests.
None the less, I found this a comprehensive, at times brilliant, survey of both artistic theories about the concept of place as well as a thorough documentation of the specific expressions of these theories in art work. Lippard's scope of reading and breadth of knowledge about art all over the United States (this book is entirely about the U.S.) is nothing short of stunning.
The actual form of the book is a little difficult to explain, The book has a five part structure, each part with a title: Around Here, Manipulating Memory, Down to Earth: Land Use, The Last Frontiers: City and Suburbs and Looking Around. Each of these parts contains sub-chapters that are titled with various aspects of the five parts. Lippard's style is basically to situate each chapter with a brief survey of what other writers have said about the "subject", followed by a description of different acts of arts intermingled with commentary. Each of the pages also contains images with substantive critical passages. Along the top of each page, there is a running essay about the author's experiences growing up in Maine.
I found her work to be fairly comprehensive: Although she has end notes and a thorough bibliography, I found myself doubting that any of them so totally nailed the relationship between art and the concept of place.
If the author or her representatives are reading this, I would recommend updating this book in another couple of years.
Lippard is a self-declared liberal. Although I did not always agree with her analysis, I admired the manner in which she was able to outline her bias in a non-intrusive way. She could be more forceful with her arguments. I don't think anybody could begrudge her opinions.
